POSITION: PARKS BEAUTIFICATION COORDINATOR

This is a full-time seasonal position that has potential to be year-round. Working under the direction of the Public Works Department and reporting to the Public Works Superintendent the Beautification Coordinator will be expected to perform a variety of tasks associated with the beautification and maintenance of the parks, fields and town public spaces and will work alongside and supervise summer students.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ordering plants and flowers for public spaces, hanging pots and planters, welcome signs and any other public sites.
  • Planting and maintenance of all gardens, flowers, shrubs, and turf.
  • Provide direction, advice, training, and guidance to employees, including summer students, on the care of trees, flowers, shrubs, plants and turf, growing techniques and horticultural products.
  • General inspection and maintenance of parks.
  • Coordinate and assist with maintenance and preparation of hanging baskets, planters, and containers including soil, fertilizer, watering, etc.
  • Identify signs and symptoms of pests and assist in determination of appropriate pest control, considering factors such as safety of staff and the public, as well as the health and condition of trees, shrubs, plants and turf.
  • When time permits, working with the assistance of the summer students, prepare an inventory of all trees within the Town public spaces to ensure proper pruning, protection and as a last recourse, removal of diseased trees.
  • Performs housekeeping chores daily, to keep work areas clean and ensure tools and equipment are kept clean and in good repair.
  • Participate in hiring summer students including the interview process.
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment safely and effectively for completion of tasks including gardening, power tools and implements.
  • Daily scheduling of tasks and overseeing the work. This will also include working alongside the students, providing instruction and mentoring where needed.
  • Participate in all safety and other required training.
  • Participate in relevant training/education.
  • Coordinate fall cleanup of Cenotaphs, Allen Park, and Sobey's Park.
  • Ensure pots are cleaned out at the end of the season.
  • Research and enact solutions for best weed and/invasive plant issues.
  • Physical duties such as mulching, weeding, mowing, trimming, etc.
  • Work in all weather conditions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Technical Training in Horticulture or a related field would be considered an asset.
  • Minimum Grade XII or GED equivalent.
  • Class 5 driver's license
