General Information

The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), Clinical Prevention Services, is seeking two (2) Associate Physicians to provide clinical and academic services at either or both the Vancouver Tuberculosis (TB) Clinic and/or the New Westminster TB Clinic (hereby referred to as "the Clinic"). The Associate Physician practices under the direction and supervision of the Medical Lead, TB Services and works in a structured, team-based care setting to increase capacity and service delivery

BCCDC's Lower Mainland TB clinics are located in Vancouver and New Westminster and provide TB testing, treatment and follow-up care to those with TB infection or active TB disease. The duties and responsibilities of the Associate Physician include undertaking assessments and investigations, collaborating with other health professionals to provide patient care and/or consultation, and communicating with patients about health findings, diagnosis, treatment and follow up.

Specific Accountabilities

Clinical Services include but are not limited to:

  • Investigation and management of active cases of TB;
  • Triage and management of referrals to the Clinic;
  • Investigation and management of TB infection, including the offer and provision of preventative therapy.
  • Investigation and management of TB contacts, including the offer and provision of "window period prophylaxis" for the prevention of TB in young children;
  • Immigration surveillance assessment and follow-up;
  • Review and recommendations on all aspects of the Provincial TB Screening program (e.g. chronic kidney disease, pre-biologics)
  • Interpretation of laboratory data and chest imaging in the context of above

Consultation Services include but are not limited to:

  • Provision of advice and support to the clinic nurse supervisor, clinic nurses, outreach nurses and support workers, nurse consultants, nurse practitioner and other TB Services physicians and team members;
  • Provision of consultative advice to Medical Health Officers, other physicians, public health nurses and other clients or stakeholders seeking advice;
  • Provide appropriate advice and referral for non-tuberculosis conditions encountered during the course of work in any of the Society's clinics;
  • Attendance and active participation in at least 8 of the monthly scheduled medical practitioner meetings per annum.

The Associate Physician will also be expected to:

  • Assist in teaching and support in the supervision of trainees (e.g. medical residents) in the clinic.
  • Participate in clinical research trials in the clinic.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuing professional development
  • Ensure timely documentation in the EMR

Qualifications

This position requires a Medical degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools; minimum of two (2) years of accredited postgraduate training (preferably with TB, public health, respiratory or infectious diseases experience), verified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC); successful completion of Part 1 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) or Steps 1 through 3 of the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs); fulfillment of the CPSBC's English language proficiency requirements; eligibility for registration with the CPSBC in the Associate Physician class; and Canadian Citizenship, permanent residency or the legal ability to live and work in British Columbia.

The successful candidate will also be committed to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per the Truth & Reconciliation Commission and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act

As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
