As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in optimizing efficiency, managing budgets, and presenting metrics to drive business growth and improvement.

About the Role:

The Superintendent I is responsible for leading a team of staff and overseeing the day-to-day operations of our organization. You will be accountable for the scope, schedule, and budget of project and program work within your area of responsibility. Your primary focus will be on creating and implementing process improvements, ensuring customer satisfaction, and promoting a culture of safety and excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement annual plans, work priorities, schedules, and crew allocations to ensure efficient resource allocation
  • Align operational area activities with branch, Engineering, and City strategic objectives
  • Monitor budgets and maintain cost controls
  • Support business and operational decisions through statistical branch data and metrics
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor service levels and resourcing plans for areas of responsibility
  • Establish targets for business and quality improvement
  • Drive continuous improvement through industry best practices, focusing on efficiency, worker safety, and engagement
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external customers, and liaise with City departments and partner branches to improve integration and collaboration

Supervision/Leadership/Engagement:

  • Model behavior expected of staff, including collaboration, teamwork, and respectful workplace behaviors
  • Communicate branch objectives, requirements, and rationale with staff
  • Address employee and labor relations issues in a timely, fair, and consistent manner
  • Support and adhere to Attendance Management, Stay-At-Work, and Return-To-Work programs
  • Manage performance development process for direct reports, including annual process, documentation, and tracking
  • Employ coaching, corrective action, and discipline to deal with issues and non-performance, and escalate issues appropriately
  • Participate in recruitment, selection, onboarding, and training for new hires
  • Identify team development and training gaps, and assist in developing and implementing training plans

Safety:

  • Promote a culture of safety within the workgroup
  • Ensure all work is performed in a safe manner, adhering to Branch Safe Work Procedures and Organizational Health & Safety regulations
  • Identify safety concerns and address them quickly with training, guidelines, or policies
  • Escalate all safety issues and perform accident investigations
  • Participate in Branch Safety Committee Meetings, Branch Safety Audits, and Branch Safety Inspections
  • Collaborate with Driver Services to ensure driver training and safety programs are in place
  • Collaborate with Occupational Health and Safety to assist in organizational safety initiatives

Other:

  • Lead branch initiatives, projects, and/or programs using standard Engineering project management principles
  • Ensure standard project/program processes are followed, documentation is maintained, and regular status reporting occurs
  • Align branch practices with Engineering PMO, Supply Chain, Finance, and HR policies, processes, and work flows
  • Understand regulatory obligations and ensure compliance

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by successful completion of technical, business, and administrative courses related to fleet repair and manufacturing operations
  • Considerable experience in a large, complex, unionized Garage manufacturing facility
  • 6-8 years of operations leadership experience in a unionized environment
  • Project management skills and experience considered an asset
  • Red Seal Certification is an asset

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good working knowledge of WorkSafe BC and relevant Organizational Health & Safety standards
  • Ability to interpret, follow, explain, and direct staff in collective agreement language, City policies, and procedures
  • Ability to build staff engagement through departmental or corporate initiatives and through coaching, mentoring, and training
  • Skilled in conflict and dispute resolution
  • Respectful interpersonal skills, including the ability to build inclusivity
  • Sound planning, organizational, and project management skills
  • Ability to contribute to the development of budgets and manage and provide advice on cost control
  • Ability to evaluate work methods, processes, and procedures, make recommendations for appropriate changes
  • Ability to assist in the development of branch goals and objectives
  • Ability to develop, define, and monitor staff developmental plans
  • Ability to work collaboratively across different parts of the organization
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and professionally in both verbal and written form with staff, management, and the public
  • Ability to articulate complex concepts and expectations clearly
  • Demonstrated ability to solve business problems using data and analytical skills
  • Ability to develop, analyze, and report on operational area/business area metrics
  • Good working knowledge and experience with MS Office software, particularly with the creation and use of spreadsheets, and the demonstrated ability to learn and use new software
  • Understanding of basic financial accounting principles
  • Previous experience and/or training with SAP and/or similar enterprise software such as Oracle
  • Previous experience and training using Hansen and/or similar resource/inventory management software/business information software

Driver's License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver's License or higher and a satisfactory driving record is required
