Hydraulic Design Engineer Job Description

Design hydraulic systems and components for Skyjack equipment, working closely with the engineering team to develop and improve product performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare design concepts and production drawings with supporting calculations and material data to ensure designs meet specification requirements and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Design, formulate and produce complete product related changes for current products in a continuous improvement environment.
  • Contact and interact with vendors, suppliers, and contractors to investigate technologies and their applications.
  • Design and test prototypes, employing data collection, analysis techniques, and optimization to achieve target performance.
  • Communicate with other Engineering personnel to coordinate interrelated design(s) to ensure alignment for completion.
  • Maintain thorough documentation for all aspects of assigned projects.
  • Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Provide support in checking details, assemblies and BOMs for assigned projects.
  • Mentor other Engineering Designers and Design Engineers.
  • Perform Simulation for hydraulic systems and components using Automation Studio and/or Simscape Fluids.
  • Apply established or modified engineering methods or techniques with considerable independence of action.

Credentials:

  • University or college degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics or any other relevant engineering-based programs.
  • Preference will be given to candidates registered or working towards their P.Eng designation.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Hydraulic Designer or Hydraulics Design Engineer in a heavy equipment (or related) manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of hydraulic controls and general electrical skills, Mechanical design, GD&T, DFMEA, welding/fabrication processes.
  • Design experience with SolidWorks (with formal training preferred); experience with Automation Studio and/or Simscape Fluids is a bonus.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work well with a cross-functional technical team as well as with manufacturing personnel.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to create, read, and interpret Electrical and Hydraulic Schematics.
  • In-depth understanding of PC and LS hydraulic systems.
  • Experience in designing various control circuits including open and closed center hydraulics.
  • Experience in designing hydrostatic closed loop drive systems.
  • Experience in designing with fixed and variable displacement piston pumps and gear pumps.
  • Experience in designing with cartridge valves and electro-proportional controls.
  • Hydraulic hose sizing and routing experience.
  • Hydraulic filtration design experience.
  • Troubleshooting of various control circuits experience.
  • Familiarity of Automation Studio and/or Simscape Fluids would be beneficial.
  • Hydraulic testing and development of hydraulic test plans would be beneficial.
