Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Visitor Safety Lead, the Head Patroller is responsible for ensuring the ongoing safety of our guests through oversight of day-to-day operations of the patrol department and supervision of the Patrol team year-round (paid and volunteer). Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Responsible for running shifts, assigning patrollers areas to patrol, day-to-day tasks, managing accident/incident calls, and ensuring patrol coverage of busy and/or high-risk areas
  • Recruitment, selection, and training of Patrollers; preparing schedules including regular season shifts and special events, payroll/hours review and approval while managing labour costs
  • Provide mentorship and development for leads and seniors, completion of seasonal performance reviews for patrol team
  • Assist the Visitor Safety Lead in managing CHs risk management systems, CH radio communications systems, and enforcing CH policies and procedures to ensure staff and guest safety.
  • Support risk reduction program by identifying and managing hazards, as well as identifying, documenting, and reporting on accident/incident trends
  • Pre-season setup, order supplies, deploy equipment, equipment repair/replacement as required
  • Post season, collect, inspect, clean and store patrol equipment, collect and file required documentation and support with off season department improvement projects
  • Regular communication within and across CH departments to appropriately prepare and manage the patrol team
  • Assist with guest concerns and maintain a safe and attractive guest environment
  • Work in accordance with the Conservation Halton's Safety Policies & Procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all other related manuals.

Your Qualifications
  • Able to deliver emergency services in stressful situations and adapt to the daily challenges associated with the operation of an outdoor facility, while maintaining professionalism in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficient/advanced skier or snowboarder; Ability to operate ATVs
  • Must possess a good understanding of high angle rescue/working at heights procedures and equipment
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Strong organizational skills, supported by solid time-management skills, and attention to detail with a high level of accuracy
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; understanding of radio communications technology is an asset
  • Ability to exercise professional judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential information
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations and WHMIS
  • Outdoor environmental knowledge such as hazardous plants & insects
  • Proficient with MS Office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Office 365
  • Able to lift up to 40 pounds, stand, and walk for long periods of time in all-weather conditions
  • Successful candidates will be required to have Red Cross First Responder certification (or equivalent or higher EMR) prior to first day of employment or complete training provided by Conservation Halton
  • Successful candidates are required to provide a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSS), to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted (if over 18 years old). *Cost covered by Conservation Halton up to $30.00
  • A valid Ontario Drivers Licence, minimum Class "G", with a satisfactory Driver's Abstract is required. *Abstract completed by Conservation Halton
  • Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate (PCO) is an asset
  • Successful candidates must provide own safety approved helmet prior to first day of employment *Partial reimbursement provided in accordance with the Safety Workwear policy
