The City of Vancouver seeks a Social Planner I to support initiatives and partnerships for community economic development and social policy.

The successful candidate will have experience working with people with lived or living experiences of mental health, substance use, and/or poverty, and will be able to develop and foster partnerships to create opportunities for residents from equity-denied communities in Vancouver.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and foster partnerships to create employment, capacity building, and income-generating opportunities for residents from equity-denied communities in Vancouver;
  • Participate in and facilitate community and stakeholder engagement processes related to the implementation of the City's Community Economic Development Strategy and other related strategies;
  • Undertake technical research and data analysis, and policy and program evaluation to support the development, implementation, and ongoing enhancement of the relevant strategies within the Social Policy Department;
  • Prepare and contribute to the development of policy, departmental responses, reports, and recommendations to civic departments, senior staff, and other agencies on pertinent community economic development issues and/or social policy issues;
  • Project manage City initiatives that leverage partnerships with key stakeholders, including non-profits, community agencies, and local post-secondary institutions;
  • Lead complex projects that involve multiple internal and external partners;
  • Provide support and advice to community plans, social infrastructure projects, grants, and related initiatives;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • A Master's or Bachelor's degree in social planning, community development, community economic development, geography, social work, or public health;
  • Experience working with people with lived or living experiences of mental health, substance use, and/or poverty;
  • Considerable knowledge of the social determinants of health and the development and implementation of social policy;
  • Considerable knowledge of community development and community economic development processes, practices, models, and principles;
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills;
  • Ability to reconcile differing perspectives, develop consensus, and secure cooperation and support both internally and with external stakeholders;
  • Ability to build positive working relationships and community networks;
  • Excellent project management and facilitation skills;
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member;
  • Ability to complete assignments in a high-pressure environment using sound professional techniques and independent judgment;
  • Ability to be adaptable and flexible in a changing environment;
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills;
  • Ability to meet transportation needs.
