Job Title: Assistant Controller

About the Role:

Waste Connections of Canada, a leading non-hazardous waste management company in North America, is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our dynamic team. As a key member of our accounting department, you will play a vital role in supporting the District Controller in daily accounting tasks, including monthly forecasting, annual budgeting, and special projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform monthly financial close functions, including preparation of financial statements
  • Reconcile all general ledger accounts
  • Complete monthly financial projection analysis
  • Provide monthly narrative analysis of significant financial variances to budget and forecast
  • Communicate financial information effectively to business counterparts
  • Participate in the annual financial budget process
  • Prepare capital purchase requests and supporting documents
  • Implement and maintain internal controls
  • Develop and maintain regular reporting processes to support operations
  • Coordinate and perform inventory counts
  • Provide training to non-financial personnel on internal control compliance, accounting procedures, and financial statement review
  • Assist with special projects as assigned

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics
  • Enrollment in or plans to enroll in CPA or MBA program
  • Minimum 3-4 years of accounting experience in a similar role
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in MS Excel and related accounting business systems
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple priorities
  • Self-starter with initiative to learn and a strong work ethic
