Job Summary

The Pharmacy Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the Pharmacist in the technical aspects of prescription filling and administrative duties, enabling the Pharmacist to focus on providing exceptional patient care. As a key member of the Pharmacy team, the Pharmacy Assistant is expected to participate in all aspects of Pharmacy Operations, demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Prescription Processing: Receive prescriptions from patients, ensuring compliance with provincial legal and regulatory requirements. Assess prescriptions for completeness, including patient information, prescriber details, and special requests.
  2. Computer Functions: Perform tasks as directed by the Pharmacist, including data entry, price checks, patient information updates, and prescription processing. Demonstrate proficiency in interpreting written prescriptions, including Latin abbreviations and drug name recognition.
  3. Prescription Filling: Fill prescriptions under the supervision of the Pharmacist, selecting appropriate products, performing accuracy checks, and labeling and organizing prescriptions for pharmacist review.
  4. Inventory Management: Assist the Pharmacist in maintaining optimal stock levels of drugs and supplies. Check for expired medications, clean the Will Call Bin, and perform other inventory-related tasks.
  5. General Housekeeping: Maintain a clean and organized dispensary, including stocking prescription filling supplies, cleaning equipment, and performing other housekeeping duties.
  6. Clerical Organization: File prescriptions, invoices, reports, and correspondence. Complete administrative tasks as assigned, including journals, accounts receivable, and aged trial balance.
  7. OTC Operations: Assist with OTC operations, including ordering, stocking, and cashier duties as assigned by the OTC Manager and/or Pharmacist.
