Job Summary

The Powerhouse Operations Specialist will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation and maintenance of the boiler, refrigeration, utilities, and all their auxiliary and ancillary equipment. This individual will act as the ABSA Shift Engineer and report directly to the Chief Power Engineer.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure adherence to all relevant regulations, including the ABSA Power Engineers Act, Boilers and Pressure Vessels Act, and associated boiler and refrigeration regulations.
  • Start up and shut down boiler and auxiliary systems and equipment as required.
  • Start up and shut down ammonia refrigeration systems as required.
  • Monitor and maintain boiler, utilities, and refrigeration systems on a continuous basis, ensuring equipment operates within operational guidelines.
  • Actively monitor DCS computer screens and adjust as required for optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Perform boiler and auxiliary equipment water tests and adjust chemical feed as required.
  • Maintain water treatment equipment, filters, and reverse osmosis systems.
  • Maintain and monitor Air Compressors, Air Drier, and Instrument air system processes.
  • Maintain and monitor fire water pumps and backup diesel generator.
  • Participate in maintaining equipment availability to predetermined targets.
  • Support maintenance schedules and permit work activities.
  • Lock and tag equipment in preparation for maintenance activities.
  • Follow Operator Standard Work daily routines to verify equipment running within set parameters and ensuring reliable operation.
  • Maintain Boiler Room logbook as required by ABSA.
  • Complete equipment log every 2 hours, tracking specific items such as temperatures, pressure, levels, vibration, etc.
  • Troubleshoot and anticipate problems with equipment in your care, repairing if possible or informing Supervisor if it cannot be rectified.
  • Perform preventive maintenance routines as scheduled.
  • Complete small repairs on equipment as required, e.g., tightening packings, cleaning small check valves, repairing steam and condensate leaks, etc.
  • Maintain, adjust, and rebuild steam regulators as required.
  • Perform visual checks and minor repairs on the roof.
  • Keep boiler room, refrigeration room, offices, etc., neat and clean, washing, mopping floors, removing clutter, etc.
  • Monitor and maintain HVAC.
  • Receive and offload deliveries of cooking oil and water treatment chemicals.
Requirements
  • Valid minimum 3rd Class Power Engineering Certification.
  • Grade 12 education.
  • Able to work 12-hour shifts, including nights and weekends.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and alone for extended periods.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to follow personal hygiene rules.
  • Up-to-date tickets for associated duties of the position.
