Purpose

In this role, the Systems Design Engineer will become an integral part of a team that will design, develop, and integrate complex hardware systems for every stage of PerkinElmer's Gas Chromatography (GC) and Liquid Chromatography (LC) products lifecycle.Location: On site in Woodbridge, Canada
ResponsibilitiesAt Systems level, design, development and integration of mass spectrometry hardware, firmware, software, with an emphasis on GC and LC systems.Work closely with electronics, mechanical, firmware, and software design engineers to create integrated chromatography systems.Work closely with supplier engineers on the design of specialized components of chromatography systems.Assembly and testing of prototype chromatography systems and/or components.Development of performance specifications and test procedures for chromatography-based instrument systems.Support chromatography applications scientists and applications development.Preparation of internal technical reports and documentationAssist transfer to production of successful prototype/R&D pilot designs, including training and support of production engineers.Development and maintenance of functional requirements for NPI projects.Basic QualificationsMaster's degree in Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics, or Experimental Physics (Ph.D. degree is preferred)5 or more years of experience in mass spectrometry system hardware, firmware, software, and/or applications development, with an emphasis on chromatography systems.Demonstrated skill developing prototype chromatography-based instruments, including performance specifications and test procedures.Demonstrated skill troubleshooting scientific instrumentation, with an emphasis on chromatography systems.Demonstrated skill preparing internal technical reports and presentations.Demonstrated ability to interface with a multi-disciplinary technical team of scientists, hardware engineers, and firmware/software engineers.Excellent oral and written communication skillsMust be able to work in a laboratory environment, including manipulating tools, instruments and components.Must be able to handle hazardous chemicals and chemical waste as required, in keeping will all local safety regulations.Documentation, writing, and report preparation will also be required.Some travel might be required.Preferred CharacteristicsAbility to work independently or as part of a large team.Possessing a task- and goal-oriented mindsetAnalytical thinking driven by data.Ability to see both the small and the big picture.Possessing strong organizational skills.Problem solving aptitude.Attention to detail.Adaptable to change.
