Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Department of Sociology invites applications for the position of Head of Department. The area of specialization is open. The successful candidate is expected to have a record of academic leadership and excellence in teaching and research, be prepared to contribute to the department's undergraduate and graduate programs, and have an active research program. The new head of department will be able to play a key role in the growth and future direction of the department with commitments to equitable leadership, support of diverse careers as well as diversity and inclusion in the field of Sociology, and a commitment to supporting Indigenization, decolonization, and anti-racism. Prospective candidates should be full professors or senior associate professors.

The start date for the position is July 1, 2024 or as soon as possible afterward. Salary is commensurate with experience as determined by the Memorial University of Newfoundland Faculty Association (MUNFA) collective agreement. The letter of application should specifically address the qualifications and experience that make the applicant a suitable candidate for the position of Head and qualified for a tenured, senior position in the department. Additionally, while area of specialization is open, the letter of application should make clear how the applicant understands their area(s) of specialization make them well suited to the department.

The term of office for Head is three years, and normally renewable once following review. The successful candidate will return to a faculty position in the Department of Sociology after their headship period ends.
