The Physician Assistant (PA) is a unregulated health care provider who works under the supervision of a registered physician. The PA supports the physician as the principle medical-decision maker and the supervising physician is responsible for the direction of the PAs' activities. Under the supervision of a physician, PAs meet the needs of the patients by treating immediate illness, guiding patients through recovery, advising them on healthier choices, and educating them on disease prevention.

Main Responsibilities

  • conducting patient interviews
  • taking patient histories
  • completing physical examinations
  • performing selected diagnostic and therapeutic interventions
  • ordering and interpreting patient laboratory and radiological results
  • counselling on preventive health care
  • other task within the supervising physician's scope of practice that the physician deems the PA qualified to complete

Key Qualifications and Skills

  • Graduate of an accredited physician assistant education program or equivalent
  • Registered with the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants
  • Certified by the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada
  • Clinical and leadership experience an asset
  • Strong computer, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to think critically and solve problems within scope of practice
  • A team player with the ability to develop and maintain partnerships with multiple, diverse stakeholders
  • Flexible, collaborative, organized, self-directed and takes initiative
