The Ministry of the Attorney General, Criminal Law Division, East Region's Guns and Gangs initiative is seeking motivated Assistant Crown Attorneys to be part of a dedicated team advising police and prosecuting major cases designed to combat criminal gang activities and firearm related offences.

The successful candidates will report to the Director of Crown Operations, East Region and provide education, training and prosecution support to the entire East Region.

The successful candidate for this position may be able to work remotely including from alternate Ontario Public Service (OPS) locations or anywhere in the East Region.


The Criminal Law Division is a large geographically dispersed operation with approximately 1900 staff who help protect community and personal safety through prosecution of offences across the province.

What can I expect to do in this role?Duties Will Include:

  • Performing case management duties to support the efficient prosecution of major projects and firearm prosecutions, e.g. screening, disclosure, resolution meetings
  • Providing legal support and advice to various Police Services in the East region with regards to major projects and firearm prosecutions
  • Ensuring timely and comprehensive responses are made to all substantive, procedural and policy requirements in the criminal litigation process
  • Performing special justice-related projects and involvement in community programmes as requested
  • Keeping informed on office/regional/divisional/provincial initiatives, protocols and directives and implementing them to ensure consistent practices within the justice system, e.g. Bail Best Practices Protocol, Intensive Serious Violent Crime Bail Teams, Justice Modernization, Case Management Protocol, Domestic Violence Court Initiatives, etc.
  • Establishing and maintaining professional relationships and working co-operatively with all members of the Criminal Law Division (management, colleagues and support staff), and with other participants in the justice system for the purpose of enhancing communication between the parties and improving the administration of justice
  • Assisting other counsel with prosecutions, research, etc.

  • Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
Legal Experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge, experience and expertise in conducting major case prosecutions, on behalf of the Attorney General, including those involving: firearms acquisitions, gangs and criminal organizations, search warrants and intercepted communications, in the Ontario Court of Justice [Criminal, Youth Court, Provincial Offences Court, Bail Court, including Weekend and Statutory Holiday (WASH) Court] and the Superior Court of Justice.
  • Experience in prosecutions of a serious and complex nature, at all levels of courts such as firearms, guns and gangs and other complex matters.
  • Experience in providing advice to the police on various topics and litigating issues related to search warrants and other forms of judicial pre-authorization
  • Knowledge of the Criminal Code of Canada, Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, criminal law procedures, rules of evidence and case law
  • Knowledge of the role and function of a prosecutor in the criminal justice system in Ontario
  • Experience in case management duties to support the efficient prosecution of criminal matters (e.g. screening, disclosure and resolution meetings)
Interpersonal and Communication Skills

  • Demonstrated judgment and analytical ability to determine appropriate legal remedies
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, presentation and communication skills
Other Essential Skills

  • Willingness and ability to travel to other court locations to support the prosecution team across the East Region (Belleville, Brockville, Kingston, L'Orignal, Ottawa, Napanee, Pembroke, Perth and Picton)
  • Technical skills to work effectively with computer technology and databases made available to professional staff
