Duties and Responsibilities:


Reporting to the Assistant Manager of Athletic Therapy, the Athletic Therapist will share the responsibility for the care and safety through prevention, immediate care and rehabilitation of all injuries and illnesses sustained by student-athletes competing for Carleton University Athletics.

They will work primarily in a clinic setting with intermittent game day and practice coverage as required.

They will work alongside the part-time therapy staff, students and other allied health professions to assist in the coverage of practices, games and clinical treatments throughout the year.

Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal skills are necessary to interact with administration at various levels, other professionals, as well as the general public.
  • A high degree of independence, allowing developing flexibly, quickly and appropriately.
  • A proven ability to elicit and foster trust, develop positive working relationships and work effectively with other allied health professionals.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, good judgment, and solid decision-making.
  • Strong organizational skills and time management abilities are essential. The incumbent must be result oriented, assuming responsibility for development, implementation and completion of projects/initiatives.
  • A typical workday requires short periods of low effort activities such as computer work, reading medical documents, journals and rehabilitation protocols, as well as 2-4 hours of moderate physical effort for activities such as taping, lighter manual therapy techniques, standing during assessment, interactions with athletes and staff. In addition, the Athletic Therapist will perform repeated manual therapy techniques, exercise demonstrations, practice and game coverage as required.
Education and Experience:
The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

  • There must be completion of a four-year accredited program specializing in the field of Athletic Therapy OR completion of a four year Honor's degree from a university, plus three years of post-secondary education of an accredited program specializing in the field of Athletic Therapy.
  • There must be current Certification of Competence from the Canadian Athletic Therapist Association (CATA).
  • They must maintain a valid Basic Life support certificate and First Responder Certificate.
  • Minimum of three years' experience post-graduation in a variety of athletic therapy settings is necessary. Two years should be in a similar type of athletic therapy setting or the equivalent. The Athletic Therapist must have skills in such areas as injury assessment and rehabilitation, injury prevention and care, and counseling skills when dealing with injuries. Experience in emergency techniques must be maintained.
