We are looking to hire a Sports Columnist for CBC Montreal's flagship morning radio show, Daybreak. This is a one-year contract.

Your role:

You have fresh ideas and a desire to create high-quality programming Canadians have come to expect from us. You have a deep knowledge of the professional, amateur, and community sports scene. You can cover major sporting events and can share the story behind the scores. You also have a solid network of contacts and know the people involved in neighborhood sports. You are an accurate, compelling storyteller who wants to be part of a dynamic on-air team. You are also committed to creating an inclusive workplace.

As a Sports Columnist, you will pitch, research, and present stories for the Daybreak radio show. You will go out in the field to gather your interviews and sound and do live reports on air. You'll also be creating digital and social treatments for your stories.

For reference purposes, and at the time of this posting, the Daybreak shift is Monday-Friday on air during show hours of am. You are also expected to prep your columns after show hours and monitor games/events in the day/evening/weekend.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Provide clear and concise live sports reports to CBC Montreal's morning radio listeners.
  • Take part in on-air exchanges on a variety of topics raised by the host.
  • Communicate sports information to listeners via digital platforms.
  • Communicate breaking sports stories to the newsroom.
  • Produce digital content for around sports.
  • Generate sports story ideas for the morning radio program and digital channels.
  • Research, collect, analyze and update information for your features
  • Find interviewees and conduct interviews as needed. Perform editing for radio
  • Determine the angle for your features. Prepare the content and presentation.
  • Present your feature on-air (inform your audience, provide commentary and offer advice.)
  • Develop community contacts and sources.
  • Present sports information and stories from the community every Monday-Friday during Daybreak
  • Participate in the station's outreach strategy by attending community events and being a key personality for our station.
  • Be able to use our recording and editing software (Dalet) for production purposes.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:

A) Qualifications:
  • Professional college degree and four years of work experience or the
  • equivalent.
B) Competencies:
  • Excellent knowledge of a wide variety of sports.
  • Knowledge of both the professional, amateur and community sports scene in Montreal.
  • Strong broadcaster on radio.
  • Must be a good storyteller
  • Distinctive on-air personality.
  • Ability to use social media to communicate sports information.
  • Can deal with the stress and pressure of live daily information radio.
  • Must have excellent English and a working knowledge of French.
  • Valid driver's license.
