NOTE: This position is located within a health-care facility, therefore, the successful candidate will be required to provide verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by a provincial health mandate.

This is an on-site position located in Victoria, BC based primarily between 2 locations at Victoria General Hospital and Royal Jubilee Hospital. The position is a part-time, 1-year term, salaried position at 50% FTE and the full-time salary range will be prorated accordingly.

Job Summary

As a staff member with the UBC Midwifery Program in the Department of Family Practice, the Clinical Skills & Simulation Technician will support and assist the operations of the assigned Midwifery Site. Each site has separate clinical skills facilities and supply storages. In collaboration with the Midwifery Clinical Skills and Simulation Lead, the position supports and implements best practices in clinical skills and simulation delivery, working closely with the Midwifery Operations Manager in areas including inventory maintenance, storage management, and troubleshooting of medical simulators and task trainers.

Organizational Status

The Midwifery Program houses the only educational program for registered midwives in BC. It has a four-year baccalaureate program operating as an independent unit within the Department of Family Practice, Faculty of Medicine and prepares graduates for direct entry to practice. As a degree-granting program for a distinct health profession, the program is responsible for its own admissions and selections process, and must be consistent with preparatory, regulatory and certification guidelines described by the College of Midwives of British Columbia (CMBC) and the Midwives Association of British Columbia (MABC). The Midwifery Program also houses the Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP). One of only two bridging programs in Canada, content is delivered online and in person over a 10-month period. The Midwifery Program is the main resource for the development of future midwifery educators and researchers in British Columbia. The program is also responsible for providing primary clinical faculty development, quality assurance for practicing midwives, and community, inter-professional, and governmental awareness of midwifery practice and research.

Work Performed

  • Maintains and organizes an inventory of lab supplies that supports teaching activities in the Midwifery Undergraduate Program and the Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program within assigned Site Unit, with strong collaboration and communication with the Midwifery Operations Manager
  • Organizes teaching materials to facilitate student learning at skill stations including the development of written and electronic materials and resources available to learners at stations
  • Organizes and ensures supplies are stocked and prepared before clinical skills sessions and/or exams
  • Provides on-site support and oversight for clinical skills sessions and/or exams to support clinical faculty with teaching as it relates to equipment use/supplies to ensure all sessions run smoothly
  • Organizes and ensures equipment is cleaned and properly maintained after each session and/or exam, and returned to storage
  • Routinely monitors and ensures equipment or inventory that needs replacement or repair is communicated with the Midwifery Operations Manager and the Midwifery Clinical Skills and Simulation Lead
  • Provides all troubleshooting of the equipment and simulators
  • Sets up and tears all the simulators and task trainers and AV systems
  • Plans short-term and long-term anticipated needs for clinical teaching and learning resources, communicating with the Operations Manager as required.
  • Communicates with faculty year leads in the undergraduate program and the IEMBP director on all scheduled clinical skills sessions and OSCEs
  • Communicates with Instructional Assistants before the start of each term to verify clinical skills sessions and OSCE dates, number of students, and supplies needed, in consultation with the Midwifery Clinical Skills and Simulation Lead
  • In coordination with the Midwifery Clinical Skills and Simulation Lead, assist and provide support in the development and implementation of teaching resources and training for teaching faculty as it pertains to clinical skills and simulation.
  • Organize and coordinate clinical skills teaching sessions and simulation conferences as required by the Midwifery Program, in consultation with the Midwifery Clinical Skills and Simulation Lead
  • Attends required trainings related to function of the job
  • Attends Midwifery Program meetings as required
  • Other duties as required, as applicable to the position

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Must exercise considerable judgement initiating and carrying through with various activities critical to the functioning of the Midwifery Program. Exercising poor judgement, ineffective communications, or lack of confidentiality could result in strained relations that compromise the Divisional activities and the Midwifery Program. The Midwifery Director may need to intercede in order to resume a productive working relationship.

Supervision Received
The position reports directly to the Midwifery Clinical Skills and Simulation Lead and will take direction from the Midwifery Operations Manager and Midwifery Program Director. The incumbent is expected to take initiative and work in collaboration with all members in the Midwifery Program, Department, UBC, and other health authority partners on site.

Supervision Given
The position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities. However, it is expected the position will work in collaboration and maintain strong communication with all members in the Midwifery Program to ensure smooth program delivery.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with medical simulation technologies, audio visual tools such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), and basic knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI) is an asset.
  • Understanding and general knowledge of Moulage, AV, and IT is preferred.
  • Computer experience required (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, and virtual meeting platforms.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner.
  • Ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
