The Town of Qualicum Beach is in search of a dynamic and highly motivated individual for the permanent full-time position of Engineering Technician I. The Engineering Technician will report to the Director of Infrastructure Services and perform work in a variety of fields including but not limited to, care and inspection of municipal utilities and transportation infrastructure, data entry and processing, drafting, cartography, construction, inspection, conceptual design, information requests and public communication.

Duties include:

Updating Director of Infrastructure Services on progress, problem-solving issues that arise, and attending meetings as scheduled;Providing direction for developing policy statements and providing technical insight at technical team meetings;Reviewing designs and/or tender documents;Accessing Town records and legal property information for investigation and processing of various permit applications and for general inquiries by staff and the general public;Checking engineering plans submitted by developers to ensure conformance with standards and sound engineering practice, and where necessary recommend changes;Maintaining records and data related to the Operations Department as assigned;Completing designs under the direct supervision of the Town Engineer;Preparing technical reports, presentations, letters, and memos;Undertaking construction inspection for work on Town infrastructure completed by Town staff and contractors;Developing as built drawings for completed construction;Assisting other departments, from time to time, to meet service levels.
Required qualifications, skills and abilities include:Grade 12, plus completion of a diploma in Engineering Technology from an accredited technical institute or post-secondary institution;A minimum of three (3) years field experience related to inspection and maintenance of municipal utilities and construction practices;Knowledge of municipal design and engineering standards as well as the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction and installation of municipal utilities;Knowledge of engineering mathematics and models, budgeting fundamentals, and standard costing procedures;Knowledge of GPS practices and procedures;Knowledge of Asset Management principles and systems;Proficient computer skills with demonstrated ability to work with computer applications such as AutoCAD, GIS, Microsoft Office suite and data management;Strong verbal and written communication skills;Class 5 driver's license.
Note: An equivalent combination of education, experience, and knowledge may be considered if deemed acceptable by the Employer.

The terms and conditions of employment are covered by the CUPE Local 401 Collective Agreement. The rate of pay will be $36.43/hr ($37.16/hr effective July 1, Successful applicants will be expected to work 35 hours/week, Monday to Friday, as outlined in the current Collective Agreement.
