Location: Fort Nelson RCMP Detachment

Shift Times: On-Call/Casual Backup - Days, Evenings and Overnights

Position Summary: Reporting to the RCMP Member in charge of Cell Block Operations, the Detention Guard is primarily responsible for monitoring the well-being of individuals in custody and performing necessary tasks.

Roles And Responsibilities:

  • Regularly observe and inspect prisoners, potentially utilizing Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV).
  • Support RCMP member(s) in prisoner searches (training provided) Note: Physical handling of prisoners is not expected for Detention Guards; any prisoner movement will be handled by the RCMP.
  • Manage meals, document prisoner activities, and keep a log of such activities.
  • Ensure cell cleanliness and order when unoccupied, or arrange for janitorial support.
  • Document and communicate any cell damages or maintenance needs. C
  • Conduct cell searches before and after occupancy.
  • Maintain cellblock security by ensuring locked cell doors at all times.
  • Properly tag and store cellblock keys.
  • Safely secure personal belongings removed from prisoners.
  • Monitor fire safety protocols and be knowledgeable about fire procedures.
  • Handle and dispense laundry items.
  • Under RCMP Officer supervision, administer approved prescription medications to individuals in custody.
  • In line with RCMP Unit Supplemental Orders, monitor prisoners with or suspected of having suicidal tendencies.
  • Carry out other specific duties outlined by the detachment in the Unit Supplemental Orders.

Requirements - Skills And Qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Valid Occupational First Aid level 1 (St John's Ambulance OFA1 or equivalent) or willingness to obtain it prior to employment. Commissionaires will cover certification costs post-hiring.
  • Ability to acquire RCMP Reliability and Public Works Reliability Clearance (RCMP Clearance process may take 4 - 6 months).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in English language. V
  • Vision: Visual standards comply with RCMP-V4 (eyeglasses allowed).
  • Capable of bending at the waist and climbing stairs without limitations or aids.
  • Mobility Standards: Capable of using both hands, occasionally lifting/manipulating up to 20 kilograms, bending at the waist, and climbing stairs without constraints or assistance devices.
  • Basic computer competencies.
  • Ability to maintain composure in challenging situations.
  • Skill in handling sensitive information.
  • Effective teamwork abilities.
  • Willingness to undergo required detention guard training, including Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) training and regular refreshers.
  • Capacity to work independently.
  • Diligent, motivated, and dependable.
