The District of Kent is offering an exciting opportunity in our Public Works Department for an Assistant Gardener/Labourer.

Under the direction of either the Public Works Director, Supervisor, or their respective designate, the incumbent in this position is responsible for general labouring work involving non- or semi-skilled duties including assisting in the upkeep and maintenance of parks, sports fields, planting beds, hanging baskets, green areas, gardens and boulevards within the District with minimal supervision; operation of hand power tools, as well as providing assistance to the drivers of vehicles of 10,000 kg gross vehicle weight and under. As directed, the incumbent will also carry out play equipment inspections, minor repairs and construction.

Requirements include:

Grade 12 Diploma and Certificate in Horticulture;Minimum one (1) year experience in the horticultural and arboricultural areas;Minimum two (2) years experience in the Public Works construction and maintenance field;General knowledge in parks and grounds maintenance;Working knowledge of the principles, philosophies, and objectives for carrying out a parks maintenance program;Ability to take initiative, exercise judgment and work independently in a parks, ground maintenance, and public works environment;Ability to perform manual and semi-skilled tasks involving continuous effort including lifting in all types of weather conditions;Course completion in equipment operation or combination of related training and experience preferred;Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence with recent abstract (Class 3 with air endorsement preferred);WorkSafeBC Level 1 Occupational First Aid (or equivalent).
Pay and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Agreement, CUPE Local 458. The 2024 post- probation wage rate for this position is $33.74 per hour plus a comprehensive benefit package.
