About this opportunity:

The Cenovus Oil Sands Geosciences team is currently looking for a Senior Geophysicist to contribute to Lloyd Thermal Geological Development.

Working with the Senior Manager, Lloyd Thermal Geological Department, this position will work with a multidisciplinary team, of geologists, geomodellers and engineers to plan annual stratigraphic well program and observation well program in support of reservoir delineation and surveillance.

What you'll do:

  • Troubleshoot completions, production/steam trends & operating pressures to find solutions for increasing production and minimizing SOR.
  • Work with the seismic acquisition team to plan 2D and 3D seismic programs to aid in reservoir delineation and characterization
  • Plan and interpret 4D seismic to understand vertical and lateral steam chamber conformance and apply findings to future pad/well placement
  • Provide QC for processing of seismic data, staying current on standard methodologies and applying appropriate parameters for the needs of the business
  • Apply geophysical interpretation techniques, including seismic inversion, to characterize reservoir complexity and identify reservoir development opportunities
  • Provide geophysical input for geomodels, regulatory submissions and resource management reports
  • Ensure consistency in development practices while fostering effective communication across subject areas
  • Generate depth converted seismic surfaces for SAGD pad planning and to aid in the generation of strat well geological formation progs, for well profiles, and for well placement support during drilling
  • Generate seismic impedance and/or density volumes and compaction maps to aid in characterizing reservoir quality for future development, to identify strat well delineation opportunities, and to identify geological hazards in planned SAGD well trajectories
  • Understand stratigraphic surfaces, depositional styles, sedimentological properties and structural features and their relationships to hydrocarbon accumulations
  • Integrate geological data and apply geological concepts to seismic interpretations
  • Identify and interpret lithologies, sedimentary structures, ichnology, depositional facies, diagenetic features, and significant bounding surfaces.

Who you are:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Geophysics is required
  • Professional Geoscientist, accredited with APEGA
  • A minimum of 8 years of geoscience experience in a variety of subsurface roles
  • Preference for SAGD thermal project experience
  • Advanced skills in seismic interpretation and analysis
  • Experienced with a wide range of geoscience software such as Hampson-Russell, Jason, and Seis Ware
  • Strong skills in Petrel preferred
  • Solid understanding of clastic depositional systems preferably with some exposure to the Manville Formation
  • Ability to identify and resolve complex technical issues and understand business impacts
  • Models Cenovus values in all interactions and activities
  • Strong understanding of depth conversion methodologies and their unique pitfalls, and the ability to appropriately apply fit-for-purpose depth modeling techniques
  • Ability to perform both pre-stack and post-stack seismic inversion, including joint inversion
  • Understand the principals of AVO and incorporate AVO analysis into seismic interpretations where appropriate, including the generation of offset-limited stacks
  • Understanding and experience generating other seismic derivatives to enhance understanding of reservoir characteristics (this may include, but is not limited to, curvature volumes, spectral decomposition, waveform mapping, etc)
