General Information
The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), Clinical Prevention Services, is seeking an Associate Physician to provide clinical and academic services at the BCCDC Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Clinic. The Associate Physician practices under the direction and supervision of the Physician Lead, HIV/STI Program, and works in a structured, team-based care setting to increase capacity and service delivery.
The STI Clinic, located at the BCCDC building on 12th Avenue in Vancouver, provides testing, treatment and preventative services for STIs, along with other sexual health services. The duties and responsibilities of the Associate Physician include undertaking assessments and investigations, collaborating with other health professionals to provide patient care and communicating with patients about health findings, diagnosis, treatment and follow up.
Specific Accountabilities
Clinical Services
- Screening for STI and bloodborne infections (BBI) at the BCCDC STI Clinic;
- Management/treatment of active cases of STI-BBI;
- Providing appropriate advice and referral for non-STI conditions encountered during the course of work;
- Provision and overall management of HIV non-occupational post-exposure prophylaxis (nPEP) for patients with sexual and/or percutaneous exposures, as well as ongoing monitoring and follow-up;
- Provision, overall management and longitudinal follow-up of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for patients at risk for sexual transmission of HIV; and
- Management of referrals to clinics and/or to other healthcare providers as needed;
- Supporting nurses in the provision and overall management of patients in the clinic.
Consultation Services
- Consultation and management of STI-BBI cases, which includes but is not limited to: interpretation of diagnostic tests and other examinations; diagnosing and staging of STI-BBIs; case notification; partner management; etc.;
- Provision of consultative advice to Medical Health Officers, other physicians, public health nurses and other health care practitioners seeking advice;
- Participation in case conferences as required.
The Associate Physician is also expected to assist in the teaching and support the supervision of trainees (e.g. students, residents) in the clinic.
Qualifications
This position requires a Medical degree from a school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools; minimum of two (2) years of accredited postgraduate training (preferably with sexual health, STI, or infectious diseases experience), verified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia (CPSBC); successful completion of Part 1 of the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) or Steps 1 through 3 of the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs); fulfillment of the CPSBC's English language proficiency requirements; eligibility for registration with the CPSBC in the Associate Physician class; and Canadian Citizenship, permanent residency or the legal ability to live and work in British Columbia.
The successful candidate will also be committed to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per the Truth & Reconciliation Commission and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act
As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
