**Laboratory Assistant Job Description**

Collect and prepare specimens for analysis, perform laboratory tests, and maintain a clean and safe work environment in a hospital laboratory setting.

The Laboratory Assistant performs a variety of tasks, including:

  • Collecting blood and other specimens, labeling, and preparing them for analysis
  • Preparing specimens for testing, including centrifuging, aliquoting, and distributing
  • Performing laboratory tests, such as urine dipsticks and glucose tests
  • Maintaining equipment, including temperature checks on fridges and incubators
  • Assisting with clerical duties, such as data entry and patient registration
  • Providing assistance with ECG testing and other related duties

**Requirements**

  • Grade 12 and completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively and deal with others effectively
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
  • Ability to organize work and operate related equipment
  • Ability to keyboard at 25 w.p.m.
