Position Summary

Respiratory Therapists provide respiratory therapy service 24/7 to patients in the Intensive Care Units, Emergency Department, Operating Rooms, Post Anesthetic Care Rooms, Wards and other specialty areas such as the Hyperbaric Medicine Unit.

In addition to clinical activities, the Clinician-Researcher Respiratory Therapist will have dedicated time to support the ventilation research program in the Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Toronto Western Hospital. The successful Clinician-Research Respiratory Therapy will work with guidance from the MSICU research group, and under the supervision of Dr. Irene Telias.

Research training including Good Clinical Practice and Biosafety training will be mandatory. Dedicated time for research will be allocated according to available funding support; initial research allocation will be 0.4 FTE for 6-12 months (reviewed quarterly).

Research Activities

  • Physiological signal acquisition and analysis (including but not limited to esophageal pressure, diaphragm electrical activity, volumetric capnography, and electrical impedance tomography)
  • Ventilation titration according to research protocols, bio-specimen handling and analysis, and data collection and analysis consistent with the skills and expertise of registered respiratory therapist
  • Work with clinicians to execute study protocols and assist with patient recruitment
  • Work with the RT Charge Therapists and the MSICU Research Group to support education and implementation of clinical innovation and quality related to respiratory care and ventilation in the Medical-Surgical ICU

Other Duties

  • Assisting with airway management
  • Responding to all cardiac and respiratory arrest, trauma
  • Attending intra and inter-hospital transports of critically ill patients
  • Administer specialty aerosolized and MDI medications
  • Acting as a resource for the nurses, residents and allied health personnel in Respiratory/Airway related care
  • Participate in teaching patients the use of Respiratory Therapy equipment for both hospital and home care use
  • Perform diagnostic tests such as bedside spirometry, oxygen saturations, blood gas analysis, administering oxygen and other medical gas therapy
  • Assist with bronchoscopies managing all ventilated patients according to departmental ventilation protocols
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
  • Previous experience of at least 2 years as a Respiratory Therapist is mandatory
  • Registered with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario
  • Ability to perform without direct supervision
  • Effective communication skills
  • Commitment to personal and professional development
