About the Role

An Electrical Designer role at PV Labs is not your ordinary stay-in-your-lane type of career. Instead, its an advanced, multi-disciplinary role that is essential to all aspects of architecture, design, verification, test and deployment of high-performance, gyro-stabilized airborne optical systems. Its where concept turns into reality, where getting it right is a whole-team effort, and where your expertise matters.

We are seeking an Electrical Designer with an insatiable appetite for elegant layouts and designing highly complex, high-speed applications for cool things. Reporting to the Vice President of NPI, indirectly to a Project Engineer and working alongside a small but impressive team in our Electrical Lab, you will:

  • lend your voice, experience and curiosity to how our designs influence the operability and evolution of our state-of-the-art gyro-stabilized optical payloads in our regular deign and code reviews.
  • work alongside multi-disciplinary teams in requirements generation, architecture, design and validation all aspects of electronics, interconnect, signal integrity, FPGA and programmable logic development and embedded software.
  • share your expertise by guiding and mentoring other members of the engineering team.
  • ensure design requirements are properly understood and well documented.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Design, analysis, implementation and verification of complex multi-layer FPGA and Microprocessor circuit cards used in high-speed and high-power applications.
  • Test, verification and debug of complex FPGA, microprocessor and analog/power circuit designs.
  • Create and review electrical simulations using LTSpice.
  • Design cable assemblies to meet signal, noise, power and reliability requirements.
  • Identify opportunities and recommend strategies for cost reduction and/or reliability improvement.
  • Design, implementation and verification of firmware (we use VHDL)
  • Leverage a Design-for-Test approach to facilitate the testing of embedded boards and systems.
  • Design of functional test systems to verify designs and validate manufactured assemblies.

Technical Skills You'll Need for Success

  • Design and implementation using Signal Integrity best practices for digital systems.
  • Design for EMI standards compliance
  • Strong understanding and application of design for manufacturing requirements for circuit cards.
  • Strong working knowledge of PCB and circuit board manufacturing processes.
  • Advanced electrical CAD skills using Cadence OrCad and Allegro an asset.

High-Value Technical Skills

  • Familiarity with design for military power and environmental requirements an asset.
  • Familiarity with design for aircraft safety requirements an asset.
