We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Metal Additive Manufacturing Research Officer (RO) in Advanced and Digital Manufacturing to support the Automotive and Surface Transportation Research Centre in Winnipeg. The selected candidate will be responsible for conducting advanced research and development activities in the field of metal additive manufacturing (AM). Your primary focus will be on exploring novel techniques, materials, processes, and applications to advance the state-of-the-art in metal AM technologies.

KEY ACTIVITIES

The RO activities in support of program area objectives may include:

  • Research and Development: Conduct cutting-edge research in metal additive manufacturing, including but not limited to process optimization, post-processing techniques, and quality control methods;
  • Experimental Design and Execution: Design and execute novel experiments to investigate process parameters, microstructural evolution, and mechanical properties;
  • Data Analysis: Using statistical methods and other analytical tools, draw meaningful conclusions to recommend process optimization and error prediction;
  • Technology Assessment: Evaluate emerging technologies, materials, and equipment related to metal additive manufacturing;
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support interdisciplinary research projects;
  • Documentation and Reporting: Prepare technical reports, presentations, and publications for internal and external stakeholders;
  • Intellectual Property (IP): Contribute to the development and protection of IP through invention disclosures, patent applications, and technology transfer activities;
  • Continuous Learning: Stay current to trends in metal additive manufacturing through conferences and professional development activities; and
  • Client Engagement: Support the business development function as a scientific discipline leader. Assist in identifying client requirements and prepare technical scope of project proposals.
Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

Ph.D. degree in Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering.

A Master's Degree in Engineering combined with work experience in research or technology development relevant to the position may also be considered.

Experience
  • Significant* experience in metal additive manufacturing in a research environment, including process development, process analysis and some materials characterization;
  • Hands-on experience with metal additive manufacturing equipment (e.g., powder bed fusion, binder jet) and associated software;
  • Significant* experience working with digital data including data collection, statistical analysis, programming and machine learning;
  • Experience planning and executing engineering/scientific research projects, including writing technical research project proposals; and
  • Experience with post-processing techniques would be considered an asset.

*Significant experience is defined as two (2) to five (5) years of experience.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

Technical Competencies
  • Knowledge of metal additive manufacturing and post-processing techniques including laser power bed fusion, binder jetting and inert atmosphere heat treatment;
  • Knowledge of error detection and prevention methods in complex mechanical systems such as metal AM equipment;
  • Ability to develop experimental plans, select appropriate methodologies, execute experiments accurately, and interpret results effectively;
  • Ability to use statistical methods, data visualization techniques, and relevant software tools to extract meaningful insights from complex datasets, may include sensor integration;
  • Solid written communication skills, including the ability to effectively present complex technical information to diverse audiences;
  • Knowledge of project management principles and practices; and
  • Knowledge of data and build preparation techniques using software tools for AM (e.g., Materialise Magics) would be considered an asset.

Compensation

The intent of this hiring action is to staff this position at the AsRO - AcRO level, which is an early to mid-career level position with a salary range of $80,523 to $133,853.

NOTE: Please note that the full RO/RCO salary scale has five levels. Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate's expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. As such, the initial salary could be within another level of the RO/RCO salary scale (i.e. above or below the intended level for this position).
