Job Summary

The Fitness Instructor is a key member of our team at VON Canada, responsible for leading fitness classes to clients under the direction of the Program coordinator and/or Physiotherapist (PT) associated with the program and in line with the certification standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Class Leadership: Lead fitness classes to clients, ensuring a safe and engaging environment.
  • Client Goal Achievement: Work towards fulfillment of client goals as outlined on assessment, promoting health and well-being through physical activity.
  • Service Delivery: Participate in on-going review of service delivery process and evaluation, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Professional Development: Attend educational in-services that are deemed appropriate by PT and/or coordinator, staying up-to-date with industry best practices.
  • Fall Prevention Education: May provide fall prevention education as directed by Coordinator and/or regulated professionals, promoting client safety.
  • Incident Reporting: Report any situations that are deemed inappropriate to their PT/coordinator, ensuring timely reporting of incidents.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Report any defect in any equipment which may endanger themselves or others, maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Compliance: Function and report in compliance with the OHS legislation, regulations, and VON policies and procedures.
External and Internal Relationships
  • Collaboration: Frequent interaction with Coordinator, Physiotherapist, and clients, fostering strong relationships.
Education, Designations and Experience
  • Education: High school graduate, with a focus on health and wellness.
  • Designations: CCAA Certification as a Seniors Fitness Instructor and/or equivalent required, demonstrating expertise in the field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching group fitness classes for older adults, including experience teaching specialized classes for chronic conditions.
  • Skills: Experience promoting health and well-being through physical activity, with a focus on older adults.
  • Assets: Experience working in an assisted living environment, recreation therapy, and bilingualism in French/English.

  • Personal Protective Equipment: The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be required, maintaining a safe working environment.
Work Conditions and Physical Demands

This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying (using proper techniques), bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics. Individuals in the role are required to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs throughout the day, with some tasks requiring fine hand movements.
