Job Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Laboratory Assistant to join our team at Surrey Memorial Hospital. As a Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the laboratory team in the collection, preparation, and analysis of specimens.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect blood and other specimens and label them with relevant information according to Fraser Health policies.
- Prepare specimens for analysis by centrifuging, aliquoting, and distributing them by priority.
- Perform clerical duties, including computer data entry for patient information and test results.
- Clean, operate, and maintain equipment, such as temperature checks on fridges, incubators, autoclaves, and water baths.
- Prepare reagents, media, and specimen collection material, and distribute them as required.
- Load specimens for analysis on barcode-enhanced automated and semi-automated equipment.
- Perform laboratory tests, such as urine dipsticks and glucose tests, using urinalysis machines and glucose meters.
- Maintain a clean and safe work area, according to established policies and procedures.
- Assist with clerical functions, such as counting inventory and notifying staff of inventory levels.
- Schedule and book appointments, and enter and verify patient registration information.
- Provide assistance as required, by performing ECG testing and operating equipment according to standard procedures.
Requirements
- Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program, plus one year's recent, related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to organize work.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Ability to keyboard at 25 w.p.m.
- Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments, including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, In Plain Sight, BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice.
