Who we are

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province's power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province's electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario's electricity needs - now and into the future.

The opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, the Senior Training Lead is responsible for leading, developing and delivering market and system operations training plans and programs for market participants and other stakeholders in support of IESO's strategic initiatives, policies and programs. The training work of the Lead will span the entirety of IESO's mandate. The Senior Training Lead provides support and guidance in the resolution of training related issues. In this role the Lead will support opportunities to develop partnership and stakeholder alignment opportunities to help enhance IESO's Training Academy and develop training opportunities.

What you'll do

  • Lead market and system operations training plans and program in support of IESO's strategic priorities, policies and programs. The training work of the Lead will span the entirety of IESO's mandate. Responsibilities include:
    • Oversee and conduct needs assessment to identify training needs/requirements of market participants and other stakeholders;
    • Lead the development and maintenance of training materials for market participants and other stakeholder's consumption for individual and/or group settings (eg. Training objectives, adult learning plans and multi-learning environment lesson plans, presentation materials, practical exercises, evaluations and feedback surveys);
    • Develop strategies to share knowledge and train third parties offering market and system operations training using IESO's training materials to market participants and stakeholders on Ontario's markets and other programs and processes including changes or market enhancements;
    • Develop measurement needs and mechanisms to create evaluations for training initiatives and integrate feedback into future training materials; and
    • Lead quality assurance audits of marketplace training to market participants and stakeholders to ensure training delivery meets IESO standards.
    • Regularly evaluate program effectiveness of course deliveries, obtain necessary feedback, review course materials, and make continuous improvements
  • Lead the development and maintenance of content for the IESO's internal and external public websites (eg. Training guides, quick takes, presentation materials, online workbooks, etc.);
  • Maintain expertise of market rules, manuals and ongoing market changes as well as duties, responsibilities and obligations of market participants;
  • Advocate and provide consideration to modern instructional design methodologies. Stay current with tools used in market and system operation, conservation initiatives and other programs; support the rollout of change initiatives (eg. New tools, market enhancements, participation, programs, etc.);
  • Lead customer support inquiries where market participants require assistance navigating real-time transactions, or assistance with IESO tools, processes and procedures or training;
  • Lead the deliver in-person training to market participants and other stakeholders if required. Occasional travel will be required for this role;
  • Stay updated on emerging trends, methodologies, and tools in training technologies and best practices;
  • Foster and maintain strategic and training service support relationships with both internal and industry peers, promoting the exchange of best practices and collaborative ideas; and
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned.

What you need to succeed

  • Requires knowledge of power systems and the Ontario market and system operations.
  • Requires academic training in business, commerce, accounting, or engineering to understand and apply the technical/economic legislative parameters governing the energy industry and marketplace.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of policies, practices, and procedures for effective communication to customers in relation to inquiries, advice and guidance on market participant obligations. Requires oral and written fluency in English to communicate effectively, instruct with clarity, and prepare cogent training manuals and reports.
  • Requires knowledge in the development of effective training material which includes in-person course delivery and training material such as training guides and e-Learning platforms.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired, either through the successful completion of a 4 year University education in the appropriate field/discipline or by having the equivalent education or experience.
  • Knowledge of market rules and manuals.
  • Expert knowledge of a variety of learning environments, instructional design, and tools/processes used in market and system operation.
  • Expert knowledge of the duties, responsibilities and obligations of market participants regarding market and system operations.
  • Knowledge of the functions of generation and transmission electrical equipment.
  • Experience in the successful implementation, design, development, evaluation of training programs/courses and the assessment and recommendations of training requirements and related solutions.
  • A period of over 10 years, up to and including 15 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.

The IESO offers a hybrid work model program to most of our employees, based on business needs. Individuals participating in the program can work an average of three days per week remotely within Ontario. It also offers three flex weeks when individuals can work remotely within Ontario . When working in the office, you will be located at our Mississauga, Toronto, or Oakville location.
