One Full-Time Temporary Position
Watershed Operations (May through December)

NATURE OF WORK:
Metro Vancouver's Water Services Department is hiring for a Forest Worker and is seeking a dynamic and self motivated individual who enjoys working in a forest setting. Candidates should be capable of responding to incidents, working outdoors, communicating effectively with recreational users, and demonstrate skills in the operation and maintenance of machines and tools. All positions will be assigned to work in watershed locations, including the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve, as required.

DUTIES: (The duties described are intended to be representative of the position and are not to be considered as all- inclusive)Operates large and small equipment such as skid steers, single axle dump trucks, front end loaders, tractors, mini excavators, flail mowers, snow plow mounted vehicles, sanding units, brush cutters, chainsaws, hand tools, drills, boats, and heavy duty trailers.Assists in daily inspections and routine maintenance of assigned vehicles, as required which includes safety checks, fluid levels, oil and filter changes, snow chain hook up, and hydraulic hose replacement.Maintains a daily log for all equipment operated. Reports any mechanical deficiencies to the immediate supervisor for corrective action.Participates in daily operations and maintenance as directed by the Watershed Operations Foreman.Familiar with the use of compasses, clinometers, chains, levels, other basic engineering skills and equipment.Performs a variety of road maintenance duties, such as: upgrades, resurfacing, deactivation, erosion control, debris removal, vegetation management, landslide remedial works, etc.Assists in reservoir maintenance, assessments, patrols and debris management.Participates in emergency wildfire response, petroleum spill response, land slide clean up, and snow removal.Performs stand by as required after hours and on weekends.Assists other work groups, as required, with various tasks not detailed above.
REQUIREMENTS:Grade 12 diplomaGood physical condition with the ability to do heavy lifting. Foot travel in steep terrain and other challenging conditions will be requiredAvailable to work flexible days and hours, including weekends, evenings and holidaysClass 5 BC Driver's licence with no restrictions.Able to deal with public in a courteous and effective manner utilizing tact, diplomacy and good judgmentExperience working outdoors in inclement weather and other challenging conditionsWorks effectively as part of a team and independentlyEffective verbal and written communications skills
ASSETS:Post-secondary courses in Natural Resources Management and/or Environmental SciencesOff-road driving experience and operation of a variety of vehicle typesValid BC Occupational First Aid Level 1 and/or Marine First Aid with Transportation EndorsementSmall non-pleasure Domestic Vessel Basic Safety Certificate (formerly MED A3)Completion of S-100 Wildland Fire Suppression courseKnowledge of local ecosystems, and areaKnowledge of Watersheds and LSCR RegulationsAir Brake Endorsement, Class 1, 3 or 5
HOURS OF WORK:
40 hours per week Monday to Friday with some extra weekend, evening and holiday work, as required.

WAGE RATE:
$35.25 per hour plus 6.25% deferred compensation and some health benefits.
