Position Overview

We are looking for a well rounded candidate to join our Advanced Technology Group (ATG) on a one year contract. The ATG team is responsible for finding tomorrow's solutions for our robots. The ATG team focuses on research and development efforts that push the limits of our technology but are not necessarily going to be used by customers right away. This position requires the candidate to execute a variety of tasks such as state of the art research, building electrical and mechanical prototypes (hands-on), programming, and testing new hardware (sensors, computers, etc). We are looking for a candidate with a passion for technology and experience with research and prototyping, with an emphasis on mechanical and mechatronic systems.

Location

This is a hybrid opportunity that works 80-90% of the time onsite in our Kitchener HQ with occasional remote work

Responsibilities

  • Develop mechanical and electrical prototypes from concept to implementation
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to explore and implement state of the art technologies in floor cleaning
  • Acquire and evaluate promising technology
  • Setup, configure, and interface with sensors and other hardware
  • Design experiments and develop test protocols
  • Conduct experimental testing and analysis to validate and refine designs
  • Clearly communicate research learnings to guide product development
  • Provide robust documentation for all activities

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or college degree in mechanical/electrical engineering or equivalent
  • Strong prototyping background for both electrical and mechanical systems (maker mentality)
    • Good mechanical aptitude
    • Hands on experience
    • Experience with custom manufacturing
  • Scientific approach to problem solving
  • Strong technical documentation skills
  • 3+ years of mechanical/electrical design experience
  • Strong CAD skills in Onshape, SolidWorks or similar
  • Familiarity with rapid prototyping techniques (3D printing, Arduino, sensor interfacing, etc.)
  • A passion for robotics
  • Familiarity with Linux
  • Ability to work independently
  • Successfully complete pre-employment onboarding requirements that may include criminal/civil background checks

Nice-to-Haves

  • Graduate degree (MESc, and or PhD)
  • Industrial cleaning experience
  • 2+ years of Programming experience - capable of integrating sensors/prototyping small software tools
  • Strong knowledge of Linux
  • Strong knowledge of ROS
  • Additional academic specializations or industrial experience relative to robotics
  • A GitHub space showcasing your projects
