Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced Research Assistant to join a research team led by a UBC embedded nurse scientist at St. Paul's Hospital to support a study funded by Providence Research and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI), 2024 Team Grant Award competition: Improving the journey of care of people with advanced heart failure and transplant: implementation of a peer mentorship program in practice. This project aims to engage patients and staff in focus groups and interviews to evaluate the implementation of the peer mentorship program. The Research Assistant will recruit and enroll participants and support data collection.

The Research Assistant will be based at St. Paul's Hospital and UBC, with the opportunity for partial remote work. The incumbent will work closely with a local multidisciplinary team, patient partners, and investigators.

Organizational Status
This position reports directly to the UBC Professorship in Cardiovascular Nursing Research Manager and the lead researcher who holds a dual appointment across UBC and St. Paul's Hospital

Work Performed

  • Monitor and follow-up promptly with potential participants who complete a screener questionnaire indicating their interest in participating in the study.
  • Recruit eligible participants for patient interview, following study procedures
  • Welcome participants and ensure their comfort and safety before, during and after the interview.
  • Carry out informed consent and safety procedures in conjunction with data collection
  • Conduct in-person, facilitated in-depth interviews with patients and people who accompany patients, as well as clinicians as outlined in the Study Protocol. This could be done in a group setting, in person or virtual.
  • Enter data into survey platform and upload responses
  • Maintain research participants' privacy and confidentiality during surveys
  • Document daily data collection activities in an activity log that details the number of participants surveyed, number of people declining to participate, any challenges while working in the field
  • Participate in research team meetings and contribute to the interpretation and analysis of literature and research data, as required
  • Provide regular updates re-progress of study to PI and co-PI
  • Work in cooperation with other members of the research team and communicate verbally and/or in writing regarding work progress
  • Ability to be self-directed, and to work both independently and within a team environment. Ability to exercise confidentiality, tact and discretion.
  • Perform other related duties as required
  • Assist with tracking of budget projected & used throughout study period

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The UBC Professorship in Cardiovascular Nursing Research Manager and the lead researcher at UBC will monitor the work of the incumbent. Errors or incorrect decisions could potentially result in delays in completing the project or seriously compromise the quality of the research. In addition, if established protocols related to privacy, confidentiality, and safety are not followed, confidentiality of participants sensitive information could be breached.

The PIs: Dr. Sandra Lauck and Wynne Chiu will provide supervision.

This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a health or social sciences field preferred.
  • Minimum of two years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working with health care or social service organizations or agencies, knowledge of cardiac diseases preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are essential for relating with patients and accompanying persons in a respectful way.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to be self-directed, and to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to exercise confidentiality, tact and discretion.
  • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds, including marginalized populations.
  • Proficiency and comfort with varied types of computer software (MS Word, MS Excel, Zoom).
  • Training and experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods preferred.
  • Ability to anticipate, communicate and address potential problems.
