The Food Service Worker I plays a vital role in ensuring the preparation, portioning, assembly, transportation, and delivery of food to patients and staff in a safe and sanitary environment. This position is responsible for maintaining a clean and organized work area, adhering to established policies and procedures, and participating in the department's Quality Assurance/Risk Management Program.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assemble and portion salads, sandwiches, hot and cold beverages, desserts, and "short orders" following approved recipes and standards.
- Deliver nourishment and/or other items to patient's rooms, Nursing Stations, or other specific locations utilizing approved methods and standards.
- Count, weigh, and/or measure foods and ingredients; transport to assigned areas. Assemble supplies and serving utensils for meal service.
- Wash, peel, and store vegetables and fruit.
- Load, deliver, collect, and unload meal service wagons and/or clear and clean cafeteria tables and chairs.
- Set up meal trays with items such as condiments, utensils, and napkins.
- Deliver food, supplies, and equipment to assigned areas utilizing prescribed physical techniques and first-in-first-out principle.
- Strip racks and wash items such as dishes, pots, pans, utensils, operate dishwashing and/or pot washing machine. Stack clean dishes and utensils.
- Maintain designated work area and related equipment in a clean, sanitary, and safe condition at all times following approved methods and standards.
- Perform general cleaning duties as assigned, such as sweeping and damp mopping floors, cleaning counter tops, sinks, and spot washing walls and splash areas; remove garbage as required.
- Take cash and/or meal tickets for items purchased; operate a cash register as required.
- Perform Quality Assurance/Risk Management duties by attending in-services and/or meetings, applying Quality Assurance/Risk Management principles in the performance of work, and verbally or in writing responding to Quality Assurance/Risk Management surveys and/or questionnaires.
- Perform clerical duties such as answering the telephone, filing, writing information on menu cards, and checking patient cards.
Requirements:
- Grade 10 education or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Ability to organize work efficiently.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism, and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments.
