Job Description Summary

The Data Analyst will be working with the PI and other members of the Global Control HPV Related Diseases Research team on research focused on HPV-related diseases and cervical cancer prevention. This research utilizes several research-related databases (Excel, ACCESS, RedCap, etc.) thus, the experience working with these or similar datasets is preferred. The Data Analyst will primarily be involved in data analysis, data management, and collaborating with other team members and partners on the analysis of data collected as part of the many research projects in the program. Other expectations include assisting with UBC research ethics applications, data access requests, and the development of statistical analysis plans, etc. The Data Analyst is expected to contribute to manuscript writing, grant writing and collaborating with local, national and international colleagues. The individual will be responsible for: data-related aspects of research projects, including working with the raw data to build analyzable datasets (cleaning, compiling and variable assembly), statistical analysis (including multivariate models, longitudinal data analyses, time trend analyses, etc.), production of tables and figures for manuscripts, and participating in the drafting of papers. Additionally, they will participate in project planning, troubleshooting and training/mentoring of students and trainees.

Organizational Status

The position reports to the Program Manager and Principal Investigator (PI). The Data Analyst will work independently and as a collaborative and contributing member of the team, including interaction with other researchers and graduate students.

Work Performed

  • Independently conducts data cleaning and builds analyzable datasets as directed by the PI
  • Independently conducts statistical analyses as directed by the PI
  • Develops proposals for follow-up analyses as a result of performing and interpreting the results of the initial analyses and develops, modifies and maintains code for various datasets
  • Collaboratively works with other team members and other colleagues, providing advice on analyses and data management and conducting analyses for collaborative research
  • Prepares tables and figures for manuscripts
  • Provides guidance and supervision for data management and analysis for trainees and students, graduate advising and participating in data management, and statistical analysis and research design.
  • Prepares and maintains ethical review submissions and data access requests
  • Aids in the preparation of publications and a variety of presentations
  • Participates in team meetings and updates investigators and collaborators on the research project process
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in data management and analysis
  • Contributes to grant writing as appropriate
  • Ensures timely notification of issues/problems to the Program Manager and or PI
  • Other related duties as appropriate

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Data Analyst will be accountable for the effective execution of all research-related activities. The Data Analyst is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner suited to the proper activities of the UBC, the granting agencies, and to the professional organizations governing them and those governing the activities of all other investigators. Any procedures or data recorded as part of a study must be reliable and accurate, reflecting the work performed. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered to, and all privacy requirements in place through PopData BC must be strictly adhered to. Failure to do so can lead to delays in the scientific results of projects and questionable integrity of the project. All activities are accountable to the Principal Investigator and the Department Head.

This position will be responsible for the access, collection, use and disclosure of personal information in accordance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996) and other UBC privacy and security policies. This position requires employees to work under strict confidentiality requirements; internal procedures and policies to protect personal information must be followed, and adherence to these requirements will be regularly reviewed by the employer.

The Data Analyst will work under the supervision of the PI and independently as appropriate.

The Data Analyst may be responsible for giving direction to trainees or other research staff, including demonstrating techniques to students as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Post-graduate degree in Statistics. Minimum of two years of related experience in research analysis or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Post-graduate degree in Epidemiology will also be considered.

Master's degree preferred. Senior level of experience working with population-based administrative datasets in BC, or similar large datasets or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Evidence of expert coding skills in SAS or R
Evidence of a superior understanding of statistics and quantitative health research
Experience using PopData BC's Secure Research Environment would be an asset
Experience with manuscript writing and publication process
Experience with research coordination and research administration
Exceptional interpersonal, communications, and organizational skills
Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
Ability to work with inter-institutional and/or interdisciplinary teams.
