Position Summary

Working under the guidance of healthcare professionals like Registered Nurses and Psychiatric Nurses, the Health Care Aide (HCA) plays a vital role in supporting and assisting residents/patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) as outlined in care plans. The HCA operates within their full scope of practice, staying updated with education and certifications to ensure competence. They deliver personalized care in line with established standards such as Accreditation Canada Standards and legislative requirements.

Demonstrating initiative and independent judgment, the incumbent sets work priorities, selects work methods, and addresses unusual situations. The role aligns with the organization's mission, vision, values, and policies of Southern Health-Santé Sud.


Qualifications
  • Health Care Aide Certificate from a recognized program
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Acute Care)
  • Other combinations of education and experience will be reviewed
  • Familiarity with Confidentiality/privacy regulations such as The Personal Health Information Act (PHIA) and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA)
  • Knowledge of Workplace safety standards including Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • Proficiency in Violence Prevention Program (VPP) training
  • Proficiency in SCHIPP training procedures
  • Preferably 1-2 years' experience in a healthcare setting
  • Preferably 1-2 years' experience in caring for elderly or disabled clients
  • Proven ability in organizing and prioritizing workload
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Capability to work well in a team and seek support when needed
  • Aptitude in English language (reading, writing, speaking, understanding)
  • Ability to engage with individuals and handle stressful situations, including dealing with agitated individuals
  • Respect for cultural diversity and ability to promote a multicultural environment
  • Proficiency in both official languages for designated bilingual roles
  • Capability to meet physical and mental demands of the job
  • Commitment to confidentiality in all formats
  • Positive work ethic and attendance record
Conditions of Employment
  • Some positions may require a valid Class 5 driver's license, a fully insured vehicle, and liability insurance
