Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Facilities Manager, Maintenance, Safety, and Sustainability is responsible for pool operations, daily routine maintenance of equipment and any duties assigned for maintenance, cleanliness (custodial), set-up, and safety of the building. The incumbent will be responsible for all maintenance in the building including minor repairs, emergency response and repair, chemical handling, coordination with trades, bulb and filter replacements, facility conversions, custodial maintenance and other related duties as assigned. The incumbent is also responsible for delivering a necessary level of customer service to clients, guests, service partners and all pool user groups.

This individual will work directly with the UBC Athletics and Recreation Aquatic Centre Facility Manager on tasks of varying complexity in an administrative and hands on capacity. The incumbent will have the opportunity to work and support the goals of the following areas: safety, sustainability, facility management, pool maintenance, and facility operations.

Hours of work for this position will be 5am to 12:30pm (37.5 hrs per week)

Organizational Status
Athletics & Recreation (A&R) is a department within the VP Students portfolio, with a strong focus on creating an exceptional UBC student experience. The A&R Department has a team of approximately 100 employees, and is led by a strong cross-unit management team. It services over 20,000 students through recreational programming, 25 varsity teams, 13 competitive clubs, along with thousands of members of the UBC community.

Work Performed

  • Performs all activities required to prepare for, produce and maintain pool water quality and building conditions as required
  • Responsible for keeping washrooms, change rooms, hallways, classrooms, offices, workspace and all public spaces clean, free of debris and in safe operating condition
  • Responds to initial calls for service from pool staff, assesses maintenance needs, and takes corrective action or creates service request to appropriate trades
  • Works from instructions (written & verbal), operating requirements, guidelines and procedures; always work in a safe operating manner
  • Operates and maintains all equipment and tools connected with assigned facilities as per established procedures and standards
  • Reads blueprints and understands technical manuals related to work
  • Orders supplies, conducts inventory, and maintains records
  • Maintains departmental files and records
  • Responsible for delivery of equipment and materials to support the completion or work requests within an established timeframe
  • Supports good customer service by providing timelines to departmental managers for special maintenance and small projects
  • Move objects weighing 50 pounds or more long distances (more than 20 feet)
  • Carries out other related duties as required
  • Assist in the delivery and management of building maintenance projects such as renovations, general projects and housekeeping
  • Provides input in the development and implementation of new and existing policies, procedures and guidelines related to health, safety, and maintenance.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position requires attention to detail, accuracy, problem solving, judgment, tact, discretion and initiative. Failure to respond promptly and tactfully may have a negative impact on internal and external relationships. Errors could result in financial costs and loss of credibility. If any part or portion of this person s duties is neglected, severe consequences will be felt not only by the program itself, but potentially, also by participants and patrons of the facility. The improper execution of details associated with the management of the UBC Aquatic Centre operations could result in a tarnished program and university image.

Supervision Received
This position reports directly to the Facility Manager, Maintenance, Safety, and Sustainability at the UBC Aquatic Centre. Works independently under general supervision. Work is performed in accordance with established procedures and accepted practices. Independent organization of work is expected to accomplish goals and timelines.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation. Minimum one years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Pool Operator 1 and Pool Operator 2 certifications from BCRPA and/or RFABC certifications.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience working in an aquatics environment.

Valid Class 5 B.C. Drivers License is required.

Ability to work flexible hours as required, including evenings and weekends.

Knowledge of operation, repair, and maintenance of swimming pools, equipment, and facilities.

Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions applicable to pool maintenance.

Knowledge of chemical water treatment systems and pool water testing.

Knowledge of current pool maintenance codes and regulations.

Work with chemicals or similar solutions such as liquid chlorine, muriatic acid, and soda ash using personal protective equipment. Highly effective organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment. Ability to operate job-related equipment (e.g., hand tools, ladders, pumps and office related equipment). Strong computers skills essential including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Experience working in a fast paced environment and demonstrated ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines is required.
Ability to effectively resolve client concerns in a calm, non-confrontational manner.
Demonstrated self-starter.
