About the RoleThis is a unique opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art animal facility, providing exceptional care to small laboratory animals. As an Auxiliary Animal Care Technician, you will be responsible for:
- Providing daily care and maintenance of laboratory animals, including feeding, watering, and health monitoring
- Performing minor surgeries and techniques, such as tissue collection and organ removal, under the supervision of a veterinarian
- Preparing and maintaining animal enclosures, including cleaning and disinfecting
- Assisting with animal shipments and receiving
- Operating equipment, such as rack and tunnel washers, autoclaves, and high-pressure spray units
- Performing routine cleaning and maintenance tasks, including waste removal and facility upkeep
As an Auxiliary Animal Care Technician, you will be responsible for:
- Providing high-quality care to laboratory animals, ensuring their health and well-being
- Following established protocols and procedures for animal care and handling
- Maintaining accurate records and reports, including animal health and welfare data
- Collaborating with veterinarians, researchers, and other animal care staff to ensure seamless animal care operations
- Participating in ongoing training and professional development to stay up-to-date on best practices in animal care and handling
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- High school graduation and some additional training in a related field
- Minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work weekends, evenings, and statutory holidays
- Ability to perform physical demands of the job, including lifting, carrying, and moving up to 25 kg objects
- Ability to operate job-related equipment, including rack and tunnel washers, autoclaves, and high-pressure spray units
We are looking for candidates with:
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or graduation from a technical college or institute
- B.Sc. degree in an animal-related field and/or AHT diploma preferred
- CALAS Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) preferred
- Experience working with small animals in a research capacity
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
