About the Role

This is a unique opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art animal facility, providing exceptional care to small laboratory animals. As an Auxiliary Animal Care Technician, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing daily care and maintenance of laboratory animals, including feeding, watering, and health monitoring
  • Performing minor surgeries and techniques, such as tissue collection and organ removal, under the supervision of a veterinarian
  • Preparing and maintaining animal enclosures, including cleaning and disinfecting
  • Assisting with animal shipments and receiving
  • Operating equipment, such as rack and tunnel washers, autoclaves, and high-pressure spray units
  • Performing routine cleaning and maintenance tasks, including waste removal and facility upkeep
Responsibilities

As an Auxiliary Animal Care Technician, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing high-quality care to laboratory animals, ensuring their health and well-being
  • Following established protocols and procedures for animal care and handling
  • Maintaining accurate records and reports, including animal health and welfare data
  • Collaborating with veterinarians, researchers, and other animal care staff to ensure seamless animal care operations
  • Participating in ongoing training and professional development to stay up-to-date on best practices in animal care and handling
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • High school graduation and some additional training in a related field
  • Minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings, and statutory holidays
  • Ability to perform physical demands of the job, including lifting, carrying, and moving up to 25 kg objects
  • Ability to operate job-related equipment, including rack and tunnel washers, autoclaves, and high-pressure spray units
Preferred Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with:

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or graduation from a technical college or institute
  • B.Sc. degree in an animal-related field and/or AHT diploma preferred
  • CALAS Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) preferred
  • Experience working with small animals in a research capacity
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
