The Program

What On Earth is a current affairs podcast and radio program that does a weekly deep dive into climate change issues and news with a strong focus on solutions. The program features questions, ideas and emotions about climate change for Canadians who may feel scared, curious or overwhelmed. It explores their experiences, grapples with the challenges, and critically examines potential solutions.

The program is responsive to unfolding events but also sets the agenda for the conversation about this important issue for Canadians. Treatments include: host interviews; tape/talks; paks; scripts; debriefs with journalists and feature length documentaries.

The program produces compelling digital and social media presentations of stories, and contributes to the What on Earth newsletter.

You have a track record of bringing voices from underrepresented and equity-deserving groups to air. You have a deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience, which is reflected in all your pitches and guest selection.

Along with your excellent communication skills, and exceptional creativity, you are a committed team player and committed to mentoring other journalists on the team.

Finally, you have full knowledge of the Journalistic Standards and Practices of CBC and understand that all your work is governed by these policies.

Key Tasks:
  • Pitches strong and compelling climate solutions stories and treatments for both audio and digital platforms, with a "podcast first" approach
  • Produces all aspects of a show: conducts research and interviews, gathers elements and field recordings, writes scripts, edits clips, does final mixes as required and presents stories on-air alongside our host

  • High level of organization and productivity.
  • Strong & enthusiastic team player with good communication skills. Initiative taker, with ability to be productive in individual and team settings.
  • Passionate about exploring new stories, issues and ideas.
