The RN/RPN, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) provides nursing services to clients before, during and after transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards. The RN/RPN provides education and support to clients who are receiving TMS treatments by sharing information, demonstrating the TMS procedure, and providing guidance on TMS treatment management. Prepares the patient/client for treatment, assists with the informed consent process, administers the transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment as prescribed by the psychiatrist and/or assists the psychiatrist during the TMS procedure. The RN/RPN performs direct nursing care as appropriate to ensure the comfort of safety of clients undergoing TMS, providing post-TMS care, and assisting with the discharge/transfer following treatment.

What you'll do

  • Provides individualized and intensive nursing care to clients who are undergoing TMS treatment. Organizes TMS sessions and administers the transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment through the use of an electronic device as prescribed by the psychiatrist. Administers medications as directed by psychiatrist.
  • Regularly documents, monitors vital signs, and performs physical and mental assessments at appropriate intervals. Reorganizes priorities and revises care plans as required and includes client/family in evaluating progress towards their goal. Observes and detects significant and/or life-threatening changes to client's condition and intervenes to manage changes; evaluates outcomes to these interventions.
  • Maintains basic life support skills and initiates emergency response resources appropriate to critical events. Assesses clients for transfer in accordance with established transfer criteria; provides systematic report to nursing staff in receiving unit. Performs a variety of health care interventions optimizing clinical nursing skills and medical equipment, and other medications to provide immediate relief in case of emergency medical situations.
  • Initiates measures to relieve crisis and emergent situations, and to control aggressive and suicidal behavior; administers prescribed psychotropic medications and monitors clients response and side effects; identifies referrals to other health professionals. Initiates and facilitates discharge planning and referral to community services.
  • Prepares client for treatment, provides follow-up support and care after treatment, identifies clients/family priorities and plans, assists with the informed consent process, discusses professional care and services that support these plans. Discusses facts and myths of treatment as applicable, provides appropriate educational information and reviews the process before, during and after receiving TMS treatment.
  • Documents client/family perspectives, nursing observations, educational information provided, and activities that support client/family priorities. As applicable, ensures documentation of pre-TMS required information and the consent process, noting who provided the consent. Maintains complete and accurate computerized and paper records through methods such as inputting data and documentation in accordance with established procedures, policies, or processes.

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Two (2) years' recent, related experience providing acute or community health nursing care/services to clients receiving TMS treatment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Current certification in CPR.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated ability in nursing practice related to clients with severe and persistent psychiatric illness who are undergoing transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment (TMS).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of concurrent disorders, substance use and abuse, harm reduction strategies including assessment and intervention.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of conceptual models of psychiatric care including person and family centered care, trauma-informed care, recovery model in mental illness and psychosocial rehabilitation methodology.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act as it applies to the rights and obligations of clients and staff.
  • Demonstrated skill in the initiation and management of IV therapy and administration of IV medications.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess client responses during procedure and to respond appropriately including potential complications and care issues commonly encountered in a critical care environment.
  • Commitment to develop knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments found in the foundational documents - including Truth & Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), Reclaiming Power and Place Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Calls for Justice (2019), the Declaration Act Action Plan and Remembering Keegan: A First Nations Case Study - and how they intersect across the health care system.
