Home Helper provides homemaking services to individuals and families in their homes or at the time of discharge from hospital, collaborating with healthcare teams to meet clients' needs and promote independence and wellbeing.

Job Responsibilities
  • Performs light housekeeping tasks, including dusting, cleaning, vacuuming, and laundry.
  • Prepares meals and completes environmental risk assessments.
  • Provides companionship and conversation to clients.
  • Assists with walking and provides medication reminders.
  • Observes and evaluates clients' homes and personal situations.
  • Contributes to the development of care plans with the Coordinator.
  • Communicates with healthcare teams regarding clients' needs.
  • Adheres to VON standards and upholds VON's Core Values.
Common Responsibilities
  • Promotes VON's goals and values as an integrated community care provider.
  • Ensures a safe and healthy workplace, adhering to provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
  • Abides by VON policies and work practices.
  • Protects clients' confidentiality and personal information.
  • Works collaboratively with other staff in a team approach to service delivery.
Education, Designations, and Experience
  • High school graduate.
  • 2-3 years' experience working with children, seniors, and people with disabilities.
  • Post-secondary school education preferred.
  • Household management or professional customer service experience preferred.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
  • Personal Support Worker or Health Care Aide certification an asset.
Skill Requirements
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Good assessment skills.
  • Awareness of community resources.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands

This role requires a detail-oriented approach in a dynamic environment, with physical activity including lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, kneeling, and other movements that emphasize good body mechanics.
