Train Conductor

As a conductor, you'll be part of a two or three-person crew responsible for the movement of trains, rail cars, and locomotives. Your role will involve coordinating train assembly, operating track switches, and conducting ground work both in the yard and en-route.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of a Conductor at CN include:

  • Ensuring compliance with safety regulations and procedures
  • Following oral and written instructions for train movement
  • Assembling and dismantling trains, as well as picking up and setting off rail cars
  • Observing signals and ensuring safe train operations
  • Communicating effectively with control centers and other team members

Training

New hires will undergo an intensive 11-week paid training program, consisting of classroom sessions and field training. After training, candidates will gain hands-on experience through a minimum of 45 trips with an experienced crew.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Flexible schedule, including night and weekend shifts
  • Ability to handle physical tasks such as lifting and walking
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions
  • Meeting medical and fitness requirements

Other Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong communication skills
  • Compliance with safety regulations

Assets

  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • Relevant vocational training
  • Valid driver's license
