Job Summary

The Midwifery Clinical Placement Lead provides strategic and organizational management of all aspects of clinical placements for the Midwifery programs - the four-year undergraduate degree program (BMw) and the Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program (IEMBP). Working within the unique environment of a distributed midwifery program, the Clinical Placement Lead plans, implements, and provides clinical placements for all students of the Midwifery's Program Cohorts while also continuing to establish and build relationships with Clinical Faculty members in the Programs.

Organizational Status

The Bachelor of Midwifery degree Program is a distributed entry to practice Program delivered in Vancouver, Vancouver Island, Surrey, and online. The development, implementation and management of these programs is complex and requires close collaboration between the Midwifery Program, the UBC Faculty of Medicine, the hospital, and the health authorities.

Work Performed

  • Works with faculty to create and implement clinical placements for all Midwifery students, accessing complex needs for both student learners and preceptors.
  • Oversees all student clinical surveys, and provides recommendations to the Program on program improvements and best practices.
  • Oversees the development of training and certifications for students by working in collaboration with Health Authorities. Manages any educational components at all sites and addresses complex training issues. This involves ensuring information is accurate and timely with the Health Sciences Placement Network (HSPNet) and successful completion and updating of all Student Practice Education Core Orientation for the various Health Authorities
  • Creates and leads preceptor recruitment and retention, such as developing and organizing all aspects of recruitment and developing strategies to retain Clinical Faculty members within the Program.
  • Acts as the first point of contact for all clinical faculty challenges and is responsible for outreach to previous preceptors to repair relationships and have difficult conversations to understand how to better support and re-engage preceptors who have refused students.
  • Provides support in the development of Midwifery clinical courses curriculum and ongoing program changes. Stay up to date on trends and events related to Midwifery education within Canada and liaise with other midwifery programs to establish community support and learning
  • Participates and leads committees and working groups as appropriate, briefs the Program Director on all aspects of activities
  • Responsible for internal and external communications for preceptors, ensuring communication plans are developed and communicated to bridge communication between the program, designated sites, faculty, staff and learners.
  • Acts as a representative and attends various committees including but not limited to faculty appointment and promotions, Midwifery operations committee, Midwifery student support committee.
  • Recommends to the Program Director systems and procedures to improve the efficiency of the Program and the delivery of clinical courses.
  • Builds networks and maintains a close working relationship with preceptors and key partners within the Program (e.g. Health Authorities).
  • Plans and organizes all databases and systems with clinical placements and preceptor engagements.
  • Liaising with course instructors, tutors, student services offices, as necessary.
  • Addresses and manages escalated student issues, consulting with the Center for Accessibility and program student services office as required.
  • Other duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

As the Clinical Placement Lead for the only educational programs for Midwives in BC, this individual is key to the success and sustainability of this reproductive health care profession. Any errors could adversely affect the effectiveness, reputation, and functionality of the Midwifery Director, Clinical Faculty Members, the Head of Department of Family Practice, the Associate Dean for Health Professions, and the overall Faculty of Medicine and UBC as a whole.

Supervision Received

The position reports to the Senior Administrative Business Manager and functions with a high degree of autonomy with oversight from Director, Midwifery. Decisions and operations are done cooperatively, and this individual is expected to manage and communicate with regards to workflow as necessary. The position takes direction from the Student Services Manager and operational direction from the Midwifery Program and the Department of Family Practice.

Supervision Given
The position may provide direction to students, or temporary employees. This position is an independent role and can be provide direction and clarity as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
University degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background, understanding and knowledge in the Midwifery practice and profession is highly preferred.
  • Maturity, diplomacy and tact to exercise independent judgment and effectively cope in a highly political environment.
  • Negotiation skills and exceptional verbal and written interpersonal skills to succeed working in a unique, inter-site team in a distributed health professional education environment.
  • Knowledge of health professional education and experience working in a student service environment.
  • Understanding of Midwifery organizational course structure.
  • Highly effective time management, attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Experience in building relationships with professionals and a demonstrated understanding of the complexity in engaging these individuals in clinical teaching roles.
  • Experience leading change in an environment of constant change and ambiguity by creating and communicating a vision and taking appropriate action to ensure acceptance and support.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and professionally, requiring initiative and the ability to lead in challenging and sensitive situations.
  • Experience in fostering the long-term learning and development of clinical faculty through coaching, managing performance, and mentoring; supporting reports and indirect reports in an environment of continuous quality improvement.
  • Experience with conducting needs analyses, plan, organize, manage, monitor, complete, and evaluate projects within allocated time and resources.
  • Demonstrated leadership and success motivating, engaging and supporting individuals and team members to achieve positive organizational outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, weigh risks, prioritize and apply sound judgment to decision making and problem solving while working under pressure and multi-tasking to meet deadlines.
  • Must be highly motivated, resilient, innovative, and deeply collaborative.
