We're searching for an experienced and passionate professional to take on the role of Data Science Manager, Risk. In this role you'll spearhead the roadmap of data science products encompassing fraud and credit risk at Helcim. You will lead a talented team of data scientists as we scale our data science capabilities and technology platform through our next stage of growth.

Collaborating closely with our Risk Operations and Software Development teams, our efforts will enhance our decision-making and automated processes across areas such as underwriting, fraud detection and risk mitigation strategies. Ultimately, you'll empower Helcim to continuously improve by leveraging data-driven insights to make better decisions.

What you'll do:

  • Prioritize and continuously develop the roadmap of data science products focused within the risk domain.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define and prioritize strategic objectives, translating complex business requirements into actionable opportunities for leveraging data science.
  • Drive the data science development process to identify opportunities and develop the statistical algorithms, machine learning models, and strategies to manage our risk.
  • Experiment and iterate to identify the most effective strategies to mitigate our risk.
  • Partner with the Data Platform team to ensure data capture, cleanliness, system development and monitoring meet the needs of our risk mitigation efforts.
  • Scale up, lead, and develop Helcim's risk focused data science team.
  • Utilize a diverse range of data sources to enhance Helcim's capabilities in underwriting, fraud detection, pricing strategies, and ongoing risk management.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement within the Data & Analytics function, influencing processes, tools, and systems to facilitate scalable and effective decision-making.

Who you are:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in data science, machine learning, or a related field, with a focus on risk management, fraud detection, or financial services.
  • Experience in data science management, with a track record of successfully leading teams to deliver high-quality data products at scale.
  • Strong understanding of analytics engineering development cycles, including data modeling, version control, documentation, and best practices for codebase development.
  • Proficiency in the data science development lifecycle, including problem definition, exploratory data analysis (EDA), feature engineering, modeling, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement.
  • Solid grasp of mathematical fundamentals in advanced statistics, optimization, and/or economics.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment, prioritizing iterative technical solutions to solve complex problems.
  • Experiences with the following technologies will be assets in this role:
    • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and and their BigQuery Data Warehouse
    • Metabase or other business intelligence applications
    • Data transformation technologies such as dbt
    • Apache Spark or similar distributed computing platforms
  • Experience in consumer or business credit and fraud modeling will be an asset in this role.

Join Our Team:

Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada and be located in Calgary for this position. Helcim uses a hybrid work structure where team members can work 3 days in the Calgary office (Monday/Wednesday/Friday) and 2 days (Tuesday/Thursday) at home.
