About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Protected Area Planner to join our team at the Government of Nova Scotia. As a key member of our conservation team, you will play a critical role in implementing various elements of a two-year, multi-million-dollar, partner-based conservation project.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to key biodiversity conservation programs, including the creation of new protected areas on crown land, protection of private land, restoration of ecological connectivity, and identification of Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures.
  • Facilitate collaborative conservation planning and action, undertake targeted ecological inventory, analysis, and prioritization work.
  • Work in a team environment with staff from this and other provincial departments, municipalities, Nova Scotia Mi'kmaq representatives, lands trust partners, and various contractors and conservation groups.
  • Interact with industry and non-government partners, community groups, conservation and recreation organizations, and others to advance project goals.
  • Develop public communication materials, prepare reports, and negotiate and oversee contracts.
  • Be involved in policy development as required.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will have a bachelor's degree in Planning or a related area of concentration, such as Environmental Studies or Management, Ecology, Land Conservation, Natural Resources, etc.

Experience working in land conservation, protected areas planning and management, or natural resource management will be considered an asset, as will possession of some knowledge of provincial legislation and programs relevant to protected areas establishment and management or private land conservation in Nova Scotia.

Additional assets include project management experience or experience with collaborative conservation planning, stakeholder engagement, or the facilitation of partnerships, as well as working familiarity with geographic information systems.
