Detailed Overview
In alignment with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and Fraser Health's Mission and Values, this position involves providing and coordinating pre and post-operative nursing care for both adults and children. The role includes assisting with surgical and interventional procedures, as well as discharge teaching in inpatient units and outpatient clinics.
Responsibilities
- Assess patients and gather information from various sources to make nursing diagnoses, plan and implement nursing interventions, and evaluate patient care.
- Monitor patient acuity for significant changes, intervene when necessary, and manage care effectively.
- Collaborate with patients, families, and caregivers to develop care plans and ensure family involvement in care processes.
- Coordinate nursing care, set priorities, delegate tasks, and make referrals to the interprofessional care team.
- Teach patients and families about illness prevention, health restoration, and maintenance.
- Document assessments, interventions, outcomes, and referrals according to practice standards.
- Participate in research, quality improvement activities, educational programs, and in-services.
- Act as a preceptor or mentor to new nursing staff and students.
- Provide feedback on patient care programs, policies, and equipment effectiveness.
- Perform other related duties as needed.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an approved School of Nursing and current registration as a Registered Nurse with the BCCNM. Minimum of two years of recent clinical experience in the relevant area, along with post-graduate coursework or certification, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to initiate and maintain intravenous therapy.
- Perform patient assessments and provide nursing care using appropriate interventions.
- Effective communication with patients, families, medical staff, and the care team.
- Promote person-centered care, demonstrate empathy, and advocate for patients' rights.
- Integrate and evaluate data to problem-solve efficiently.
- Teach and instruct patients and families on healthcare topics.
