We are currently hiring for a Software Developer to join our Digital Practice team. This opportunity is a key role in our Digital Practice department, focused on identifying, prioritizing and contributing to initiatives to propel the digital practice forward in partnership with the Director of Digital Practice. In this role you will be working as part of a small Computational Design team at Fast + Epp, focusing on improving the efficiency of our structural engineering team. This role is ideal for someone with a Civil Engineering background that is looking to move into a technology role with room for growth and professional development opportunities.


General function

The Software Developer requires the following skills and knowledge:

  • Interpersonal skills for overseeing the priorities and performance of technical group leaders and engaging with other managers in the department.
  • Develop digital tools for internal use (e.g. BIM integration, automation of repetitive engineering tasks, cloud-based calculations).
  • Illustrate digital design tasks via videos, sketches, live demonstrations for the purpose of communicating structural engineering to clients and collaborators.
  • Assist in improving F+E’s firmwide technology stack.
  • Development of structural software tools for external clients.
  • Provide insight on new digital methods and technology that can impact our firm's services.
  • Participate in professional development within computational/software space by attending conferences, joining industry groups, learning new software and providing internal training for less experienced staff.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of engineering experience, with a strong background of tool creation and software development.
  • 1-2 years+ of working experience in a similar role within the AEC (Architecture, Engineering or Construction) preferred.
  • Eng., P.E. or equivalent preferred.
  • Bachelor’s level degree or higher in Civil Engineering preferred.
  • Computer science degree and/or several years’ experience writing C#, Python, or similar.
  • Familiarity with version control.
  • Track record and/or portfolio demonstrating ability to solve conceptually challenging problems.
  • Comfortable working in a lean startup: working in an agile fashion, pivoting based on lessons learned, and a willingness to help fill gaps.
  • Extensive experience with the following:
  • Migrating document attachments from legacy solutions to a new modernized solution.
  • Working in cloud technologies (such as Azure or AWS).
  • All steps of data migration activities such as data profiling, data mapping, developing data migration solutions, data validation and audit.
  • Writing APIs connecting various pieces of design software.
  • Knowledge of various database structures.
  • The building industry: architecture, engineering, fabrication, and/or construction.
  • 3D design tools: CAD, BIM, solids modeling, simulation/analysis (such as finite elements), etc.
Experience delivering the required system changes and/or working with the development team or a dedicated conversion team to specify loads programs. A team player with a track record for meeting deadlines, managing competing priorities and client relationship management experience. Communication, facilitation, negotiation, consensus building, and problem-solving skills.
