Addictions Counselor III

Reporting to the Manager, the Addictions Counselor III works independently as a member of the multi-disciplinary team providing evidence-informed and best practices in assessment, treatment, interventions, support, and follow-up to clients registered to the Opioid Dependency Program. As an Addictions Counselor III, you will conduct assessments, determine goals and treatment plans in collaboration with clients and clinicians, and facilitate skill building groups. You will be in a case management role with clients. You will facilitate client connections with community and government supports and advocate for clients with these external service providers. You will support clients with establishing housing, financial supports, food and clothing, transportation, and social supports for clients. You will be responsible for providing education and coaching support related to daily living skills and activities, observing and reporting changes in the clients’ behaviors, participation and ability to function independently to the interdisciplinary team. The Addictions Counselor III collaborates with health care and community service providers to ensure a continuum of addiction and mental health care in the community. Knowledge of community resources is important in order to provide appropriate referrals as required. This position has been identified and is anticipated to transition to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will provide quality, client focused, recovery based and culturally appropriate assessment, treatment, case management, crisis intervention, education and referral services for clients and their families; as well as community stabilization services. You will develop and implement treatment plans and provide a range of interventions which offer least intrusive and most appropriate services to clients and their families. You will also monitor and evaluate client progress and achievement of recovery goals and adapt treatment as needed. As an Addiction Counsellor III, you will depend on your excellent relationship building skills with clients, families, government staff and colleagues.
Bachelor's degree in Addictions or a combination of a bachelor's degree in a related field with course work in addictions. A related degree combined with a diploma related to addictions, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Individuals eligible for registration under the Health Professions Act (Alberta) must maintain active registration. Individuals may require authorization/permission under regulation to perform restricted psychosocial interventions and/or restricted activities.
BLS-C (Basic Rescuer) required or available for immediate training. Non-Violent Crisis Intervention required or available for immediate training. Minimum 3-5 years current clinical experience working with individuals who have mental health and addictions concerns. Outpatient/community experience. Experience developing and facilitating groups.
Mindfulness about cultural and gender diversity and positive regard towards clients. Experience with multi-cultural recovery pathways. Knowledge of an Indigenous language & culture. Knowledge of systemic issues such as poverty and stigma. Experience with Connect Care. Knowledge of Mental Health Services Protection Act and Narcotic Transition Services regulations.
