ROLE PURPOSE
The Recreational Therapist plays an integral part in the support provided to residents within our program. The Recreational Therapist develops and provides therapeutic recreation interventions, assesses client’s recreation/leisure needs, abilities and interests, maintains a variety of records, plans and implements therapeutic recreation care plans, evaluates the effectiveness of interventions, and communicates with the client/family and other health care team members.

- Establish and maintain good interpersonal relations with residents, staff, visitors and volunteers, by displaying tact, courtesy and patience

LOCATION

HOURS
40 hours per week; Monday to Friday, 0830 - 1630
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Gathers pertinent client information using best practice guidelines, selecting and utilizing valid, reliable, standardized, and site-specific assessment tools in both Therapeutic Recreation and Allied Health domains
- Assesses the client’s recreation/leisure needs, abilities and interests utilizing an evidence-based approach within a specified time frame
- Develops programs based on resident’s request, interests and needs, inclusive of residents in isolation or quarantine due to illness or inability to mobilize out of their suite
- Discusses plans with the interdisciplinary team, including client/family/caregivers, and evaluates intervention plans to achieve optimal health outcomes
- Liaises and maintains relationship with community groups and organizations to provide social activities for residents
- Assist with resident and staff education
- Responsible for newsletters, monthly calendar and scheduling activities
- Responsible for recruitment of volunteers
- Participate with leadership initiatives, as directed
- Sit on committees, as indicated, for quality improvements of the program
- Prepares and submits program information reports, evaluations, statistical information; keeps Managers aware of non-routine, urgent or potential problems that may require intervention.
- Participates in the budget development of the recreation activities; estimates and monitors and collaborates on budgets and ensures budgets are adhered to; purchases equipment and supplies as needed.
- Organize and coordinate visits within the community (i.e. shopping day trips)
- Performs other related duties as required
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Functions independently, while remaining a crucial member of the care team
- Carry out significant amounts of lifting, bending, stooping and stretching
- Work within a social model approach
- Handle confidential / sensitive material with integrity and discretion
- Adheres to Connective policies and procedures
- Is available to work flexible hours as needed, which may include some evenings/weekends, as determined by program/client needs and schedules
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- A combination of education and experience that meets the requirements of a Therapeutic Recreation Association; and in good standing as a professional member of the BC Therapeutic Recreation Association (BCTRA), Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association (CTRA), or other Provincial Associations for Therapeutic Recreation.
- 2 years’ experience working with seniors, preferably in a home or community setting
- Demonstrated ability to work within a social model approach and understand principles of Assisted Living
- Good communication skills, and the ability to handle confidential and sensitive material with discretion
- Experience in the areas of Community Living and Licensed Care
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion
- Must be able to work in a team or independently, and to work with a minimum of supervision
- Proficient computer skills including Microsoft office (Word, Teams, Outlook) as well as various software as needed
REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to successfully complete a Criminal Records Check
- Ability to successfully complete reference check
- Ability to provide a record of work history
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination
- Current Emergency First Aid Certificate
- Class 5 driver’s license
- Personal transportation that is in good repair, insured for business up to $1,000,000 for liability, and which can be used to transport client
COMPENSATION
The wage for this role is $35.00 per hour plus benefits.
Important: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada, observe their weekly hours limit if under a temporary or study visa, and provide proof of eligibility if selected for the role.
