Duty Manager (Part Time)
Context
As Duty Manager you will be responsible for front of house operations during performances, demonstrating exemplary customer care standards and ensuring that all procedures and policies are in place and adhered to.
Responsible to: Theatre Manager
Responsible for: Front of House Volunteers & Duty Bar Staff and Volunteers
Rate of pay: £11.84 per hour
Hours of Work: Hours vary as per weekly schedule in-line with artistic programme, but to include 1 day a week as Admin support.
Holiday Entitlement: 5.6 weeks a year pro rata
Notice Period: One month in writing
Probationary period: Three months during which notice is one week by the employer or one month by the employee.
Duties & Responsibilities
Front of House Operations and Box Office
- To be the primary point-of-contact for audiences during performances, ensuring audiences are treated with the highest standards of care and attention, being the Quay Theatre’s representative in the absence of any member of the senior management team.
- To be responsible for the building in the absence of the Theatre Manager, acting as the first port of call for any issues regarding visitors, volunteers and/or staff.
- To be responsible for the exemplary presentation and safety of the venue, including checks to ensure that the venue and immediate areas are clean and safe prior to the start of shift, before events and post-show.
- To be responsible for the supervision and briefing of relevant Front Of House volunteers. To lead positively and maturely by example, and to ensure that the highest standards of customer care and professionalism are upheld at all times.
- To liaise with Front Of House volunteers monthly/weekly for Rotas with their individual availability if there is a shortfall in coverage to then be added to a master schedule.
- To liaise with the Bar Team and Venue Technicians when applicable, to ensure the smooth running of performances, with responsibility for customer issues or complaints, referring these to the Theatre Manager when appropriate.
- To support office staff where needed during the opening hours of the Theatre approx. 1 day a week to be agreed with the Theatre Manager.
- To confidently work on the Box Office using the Ticket Solve ticketing system. (Full training given).
- To cash up and reconcile all Box office takings at the end of the day.
- To complete show reports for all performances and ensure all departments receive these at the end of each working shift.
- To liaise closely with the Theatre Manager to ensure smooth handovers, clear communication and continuity.
Personnel and HR
- To help recruit and train all Front of House volunteers.
- To collect and maintain emergency contact details for all members of staff and volunteers.
Buildings and Health & Safety
- To be responsible for the safety of the public in and around the venue and coordinating the evacuation of the building if required to do so, liaising with the fire brigade and/or police in the event of an emergency.
- To be a qualified first aider for the building, (training will be given if necessary), and thereby be actively available to provide first aid and manage any illness, accidents or incidents at the Quay Theatre, including being competent in the completion of Accident Report Forms.
- General housekeeping of the premises; undertaking walk-rounds of the building to ensure it is safe and well-presented, troubleshooting where necessary.
- To assist the Duty Bar Staff member in locking the building and setting alarm at close of shift.
- To ensure the Box Office First Aid boxes are audited monthly and any items are ordered that are running low.
Marketing
- To assist the Theatre Manager in creating content for the Theatre Social Media Pages and responding to all messages and enquiries on social media.
- To ensure future shows are promoted to audiences through flyering, posters etc.

This post will require the successful candidate to work unsocial hours, which will include evenings, weekends and public holidays. The candidate will be required to provide references, undertake a DBS check (organised by The Quay Theatre) and provide proof of right to work documentation prior to employment.
