We are recruiting for an Environmental Health & Safety Specialist to join our client in the food production industry Reporting to the Environmental, Health & Safety Manager, the Specialist will be responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of the organization’s Environmental, Health & Safety programs, policies, and systems.


The successful candidate will:


  • Assist in identifying and reducing Environmental, Health & Safety risks and hazards.
  • Assist in managing WSIB claims and promoting return-to-work programs under the guidance of the Senior Manager of Claims & Return to Work.
  • Investigate injuries, incidents, and near misses, focusing on identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions, particularly for MSD type injuries.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Manager, Claims and Return to Work, to review WSIB claims and explores cost relief measures with consultants.
  • Leads ergonomic initiatives, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and implementing corrective measures to prevent MSD type injuries.
  • Analyze incident trends and presents findings to stakeholders to develop departmental action plans aimed at reducing the frequency and severity of MSD type injuries.
  • Design and deliver training programs for employees, management, and Safety Committee members to ensure compliance with legislative requirements and enhance overall Environmental, Health, and Safety performance.
  • Support the implementation of safety excellence program initiatives.
  • Maintain a visible presence in all departments, providing leadership to site teams, and covering all shifts as needed.
  • Conduct ergonomic assessments on new and existing job tasks, reviewing process changes or new/modified equipment with a focus on body mechanics and ergonomics.
  • Develop job aids, work procedures, and one-point lessons to effectively communicate expectations to employees.
  • Support the communication and implementation of site-specific and company-wide policies, standards, and SOPs.
  • Collaborate on Environmental initiatives with the Senior Manager, Environment & Sustainability.
  • Provide Health & Safety guidance to Managers and Supervisors.
  • Ensure that records and documentation are accurately maintained in the Integrated Management System (IMS) to safeguard Company interests.


The successful candidate offers:


  • 5+ years of Health and Safety experience in a similar unionized environment or relevant combination of experience.
  • Excellent working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Ontario Regulations, and WSIB, with the ability to apply legislative and industry safety standards effectively.
  • Strong collaboration skills and a team-player mindset.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including MS Office.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to custom software applications.
  • Previous experience working with regulatory bodies such as the Ministry of Labour or the Ministry of the Environment considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of workplace hazards, occupational illnesses, risk assessment, prevention methods, and application of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) best practices.
