INTRO
The S&T Electrical Safety Specialist will report to the Manager of HSSE&Q S&T Support Branch within the S&T Facilities Operations Division. The focus of the S&T Electrical Safety Specialist is to support the Science & Technology (S&T) organization in the protection of people, environment, and equipment from unnecessary harm. The S&T Electrical Safety Specialist will support S&T line managers and employees to ensure implementation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of CNL’s Electrical Safety Program within the Science and Technology Mission. This position will perform the role of S&T Electrical Safety Program (ESP) Delegate and perform duties described below as part of this role. As an additional secondary function, this position will also support the maintenance and continuous improvement of all other Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) programs within the Science and Technology mission.
What will you be doing
- Problem solving is essential for supporting the improvement of safety across CNL. Must have the ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong.
- Inductive reasoning, ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions.
- Analyze data or information, identify the underlying principles, reasons, or facts of information by breaking down information or data into separate parts.
- Identify objects, actions, and events: identify information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events.
- Critical thinking, use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
- This role will have a variety of opportunities for making recommendations and engage in decision making.
- While working with project teams within R&D, this position will be one of many SMEs that contribute to the project through an Integrated Work Team model.
- Oral communication, expressing ideas and opinions clearly and effectively.
- Ability to manage duties through efficient planning, time management, detail orientation, and prioritization.
- Ability to partner, seek common goals, and collaborate with project teams and operational teams.
- Ability to interact with managers and directors to solicit advice and to promote implementation strategies.
- Ability to engage audience through presentation skills.
- This role may have occasional travel.
- Field work is a cornerstone activity in this role.
- This role may have to travel between Deep River and Chalk River sites and infrequent travel for training and conferences.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
- Licensed from a recognized institution in any of the following: Industrial Electrician, electrical engineering, electronics engineering or “red seal” electrical trades equivalents.
- Occupational Health and Safety Certificate/Degree along with CRSP or CRST (Canadian Registered Safety Professional and/or Technician) designation is desired. If no designation, then must be capable and willing to obtain within a reasonable time.
- Will be required to take CNL Radiation Protection Group 3 training.
- 7-8 years of safety related and relevant experience. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in research/lab, industrial and highly technical environments.
- Minimum 5 years of electrical safety experience involving industrial, research and development electrical applications, PLC programming, electronics, and robotics.
- Knowledge of pressure boundary systems and S&T’s pressure boundary program would be considered an asset.
- Knowledge of the Integrated Work Control process would be considered an asset.
- Ability to communicate in French would be considered an asset.
- Be able to function in an integrated work team model that brings together subject matter experts to create work plans for various projects.
- Demonstrates “safety first” attitude. Ensure activities are conducted with CNL, public and employee safety foremost in mind.
- Ability to maintain and grow safety knowledge including industry best practices and pending changes in legislation.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, communication (active listening, oral expression/comprehension) and training/presentation skills.
- Resource, observe, receive, and otherwise obtain information from all relevant sources.
- Physically fit, able to be physically active (standing, walking) for up to 7.5 hrs a day. Able to manage stairs, ladders, and other egress equipment to enter all site and building areas including confined space. Able to use personal protective equipment including a respirator.
- Ability to remember what is seen and heard for reporting.
- Coordination and planning skills.
- Must possess a working level knowledge of occupational health & safety legislation relating to general research, laboratory, and industrial environments.
- Must possess a working level knowledge of Canadian and Ontario Electrical Codes, Workplace Electrical Safety Standard CSA Z462; and Boiler, Pressure Vessel, and Piping Code CSA B51.
- Must have extensive working knowledge of specific federal (CLC) and provincial legislation (Ontario) that affects occupational health and safety within CNL.
- Knowledge of the CNL OSH Program would be considered an asset.
- A working knowledge of radiation protection principles would be an asset. Must be willing to undertake and successfully complete formal and on-the-job CNL Radiation Protection training relevant to this position.
- Industrial Hygiene operating instructions and procedures.
- Incident / Event investigation.
- Principles and practices of customer service.
- Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
Security clearance eligibility required: Level 2 Secret Site Access Security Clearance (SASC) which has a minimum requirement of 7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom.
